air box

hi guys,got my engine in but have hit another problem.ive used mk1 golf gti servo but i still dont seem to have enough room for the air box.mines the metal box type with the plastic connection pipes,do these have to be shortened?or do i need the other air box?any help before i attack it with hacksaw.cheers.

Have you moved the servo across 55mm to 60mm

No chance of using any sort of vacuum servo in the standard location with an S50 I'm afraid. Oh, and please don't be tempted to put a big notch in the plenum. You'll only succeed in blocking half the air flow into No6 cylinder.

why cant you shorten every connection pipe from the airbox to the engine,thus moving the complete air box away from the servo

looks like im moving the servo then,there looks like enough room to do it with the engine in.cheers guys.how do you modify the connection bar that runs behind dash?

You got to get a E34 brake rod and shorten it to the required length and tap a new thread on the end of it after cutting.

Those pipes are shaped to fit into the ends of the throttle bodies (with an o-ring seal), so you can't trim that end. The other end is a bellmouth, so you don't want to be touching that either.

what i meant was cutting a section out of the middle and joining back together with samco hoses.im going to do right and move servo it was just a thought

I never understand why people always mess with the important bits instead of removing/moving the obstacle/offending unimportant bit.

but obviously it can't be that bad looking at the number of butchered plenums I have seen and NO engine failures reported. Or is everybody just keeping quite???

It's not so much that the engine will fail, it's more that it won't make all the power it should.
