My mrs drives a T plate one of these, its a lovely car and a steal at £825 what we paid!
Rusty rear arches, watch out for them and coil springs (all round, not just rear)
Had no probs with ours, runs sweet as a nut and that one has long T&T and good tyres etc so you should do alright for under a grand
Only criticism is it's a bit juicy about the toon (as you would say) but the mrs driving style don't help.
Watch out for the door locks and catches failing in the cold weather as well, happened to my mate this winter in his 36

How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

Very good cars in general and an extra 20bhp can be easily added with a remap and a few M50B25 bits.
They can be quite heavy on suspension parts - balljoints are a common casualty as are snapped springs. Rear arches, sills, front wings and the panel between the bootlid and bumper can rot but quite a lot of later facelift E36s are still very tidy. Make sure the windows drop/rise as the doors are opened/closed - they can be problematic. Its probably got a later steel lined block. Make sure the cooling system is spot on.
If you hold down the mileage trip button when you turn the ignition key to position 1 a series of digits will appear on the mileage display - one is the chassis number which will confirm if the car has its original dash clocks.
Those wheels look gash on an E36 though.

Snide wheels, retrofitted shagged trim, lots of Stevie Wonder paint and undoubtably plenty more issues. Definately looks like a highly polished council turd from where I am sitting

Street light test or not , that drivers door is a different shade to the rest of it. At that price , IF that is the only issue , they are laughing.
