http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=477882

Turbo I4 Switchover Dates and Current 3-series, M3, and 1-series Production End Dates

On the heels of the big BMW turbo 4-cylinder (Specs/Info) news yesterday, SCOTT26 has provided (via his post) some dates for the switchover of certain BMW models from the current inline 6-cylinder to the new twinpower turbo I4 motor, as well as the end of production of the current 3-series, M3 and 1-series.

Here is the I4 switchover and end of production schedule:

E89 Z4 sDrive30i to switch to TwinPower I4 in September 2011
F10/F11 528i to switch to TwinPower I4 in September 2011
F25 X3 xDrive28i to switch to TwinPower I4 in 4th Quarter 2011
E81/E87 1 series to end production by August 2011 (new 1-series hatchback launched after Geneva - will herald complete petrol turbo-charged engine line up)
E82/E88 1 series to end production in 1st Quarter 2012
E90/E91 3 series and M3 to end production late 2011 or early 2012
E92/E93 3 series and M3 to end production sometime in 4th Quarter 2012

actually you can blame the eu 100%, as the NEDC (new European drive cycle) used for emissions testing strongly favours the use of smaller turbo engines.

and its wrong, because there introducing a lot of other issues in the quest for low co2 emissions that will turn round and bite us in the ass in years to come.

most of the real clever engineers i know can see this, but then what do we know, we just live/breath/design these things......

will explain properly later but for now - nox and nox catalysts
heavily lifed engines
oil consumption
running rich
increased cost of internals
turbo failures
several others i cant think of at this time of night.

Another cycle beater engine! The NEDC is so far away from what we really drive it's a joke! More of a joke though is that for a while the cycle never had the EUDC high speed portion. But back in those days emissions were so relaxed that it didn't make a huge difference

The emissions regulations are getting stupid as well, and now that CO2 is the 'big thing' of the moment, downsizing makes sense...Plus the lifespan of most modern engines isn't anywhere near what it used to be. Seen a few durability engines literally coaxed through their last hours to end of test, because they only need to survive without catastrophic failure.

one we came across today is bearing tolerances are getting tighter, thus less oil is shed onto the bore walls, thus less hc emission but higher bore wear.

give it a few years till we hit euro 6 emissions and we will be seeing engines that wear out far before the other components on the car. will we be seeing engines that are shot after 5-8 years?
warranty only engines that only last until the warranty expires?

and thats just reminded me, euro 6 has a nox regulation, have fun replacing your nox catalysts.

This kind of thing p*sses me off no end! Governments taking decisions that forces things down the wrong paths..

But come on ffs.. Scientists, engineers particularly, are bloody pathetic. They let themselves get shafted the whole way through. They never complain about the expense of their education (that benefits everyone, and should be taxpayer funded), the unfairness of patent law (policed by the patent holder, unlike music copywrite, which is policed by 5-0), this EU engine crap, outsourcing, media mis-representation etc etc...

And at the end of a long day of designing the most perfect stealth-boat rocket, who gets shot first in a Bond film? The bloody scientist.

Pussy.

Techies/engineers tend not to be the ruthless alpha male socio-paths that end up in politics, the boardroom and many women's knickers.
