someone i know on another forum has recently bought an e46 330i touring.

it's developed a supercharger like whine from the alternator. ordinarily you'd suck it up and bung a new one on, but a genuine one is £262+ vat, plus labour to fit.

the alternator on there looked recent and a delve into the history shows the car had a brand new genuine bmw alternator fitted by a bmw dealer in april last year.

surely there must be at least a years warranty on these sort of parts?
cheers,

harry

I would imagine there should be a 12 month warrenty on electrical parts but not certain. Do hope so for your mate.

I'd say he's got a good chance of them replacing it and I expect they will even fit under wty. :)

2 years.

However, I've tried replacing a battery under warranty and they didn't want to know. And conversely had a centre horn push replaced fine under warranty.

The only thing to wonder about is whether like other German manufs. The 2 year warranty only counts if the Owner (past or present) actually paid for the part. To clarify. Manufacturer warranty runs out at 3 years/60k. At 2years 360 days 50K. Car needs a alternator Fine warrranty cover that. But then 12 months and 12K down the like the new alt expires. And it isn't covered. (I'm ignoring goodwill for the purpose of this)

All BMW parts have 2 year warranty and is covered regardless if the owner of the car changes.

If the part was not fitted by a BMW main dealer then they may want to inspect the car.

it appears the " 2 year warranty on all genuine bmw parts" doesnt count if the part was fitted as a warranty repair, which strikes me as rather shite tbh.

the previous (new genuine bmw part ) was fitted by a bmw main dealer as a warranty repair in april 2010.

the bmw warranty ran out a few months later.

my friend buys the car, a month or so later the alternator starts whining and is clearly faulty, but bmw won't replace it as the warranty it was replaced under has run out.

pretty stupid situation tbh, and one i'm fairly sure bmw would have to back down on if it was taken to court. however, it doesnt help the person who's car is in desperate need of an alternator right now
cheers,
