Hi guys/girls,

Could we all chip in an make a little list of engines possible to put into an E30? And maybe marks out of 10 for difficulty of the job (10 being easiest), also marks out of then for the benefits, and maybe 5 each of pro's cons.

When you give your input please try to think of all the work involved, getting hold of the engine, cost of base engine, which gearboxes/diff will go on afterwards, will there be any welding, cutting of bulkhead, etc etc, cost in weight balance, wiring work, future possibilities, and also any link that you may have collected?

Don't want no great details, just as much as anyone needs to know to decide on an engine conversion, and if so which engine. I'd personally like some info on the S38?

I'm hoping if this will be a popular thread it might get sticky.

Thanks
Deian

cosworth turbo engine from a 2wd sierra cosworth. cost of engine ,gearbox and all ancillaries is aboutԚ£3000-Ԛ£4000, but budget for an engine rebuild as it will have been thrashed, approx Ԛ£2000. cost of labour for "speciallist" to fit was Ԛ£2500. easy and cheap engine to tune up from standard(204 bhp) and 330 bhp can be had for anotherԚ£1000. problems fitting included fabricating engine and gearbox mounts, reshaping front a.r.b to clear bellhousing, cutting and reshaping bulkhead at steering column to allow exhaust downpipe to clear steering column, cutting and reshaping front chassis legs to allow intercooler and rad to fit, replacing exhaust manifold with 4wd item as its a more compact part to clear the inner wing or reshaping inner wing to allow 2wd part, alterations to inlet manifold to clear brake servo, converting cosworth cable clutch to work with bmw hydraulic system, manufacture of propshaft with bmw/cosworth ends. cosworth ecu and wiring loom to replace bmw .its a work in progress so ill edit as i get info from garage.

i've seen pics of conversions using pretty much any bmw engine, including the v12. the bay is plenty big enough and the only restriction is the ancillaries, most of which can be moved

if you're interested in the S38 then click on search. karan's the only person on this board who reguarly post about this conversion and you'll soon find him.
