Are manual and auto radiators on a 1990 316i different?

They are definitely different, as the auto rad contains a heat exchanger in the LH tank to cool the auto transmission fluid. You can use an auto rad. on a manual, but not the other way around.

when i swapped a 316i from auto to manual i needed a new rad.
The auto rad has 2 pipes into the back of the rad for gearbox fluid.
I swapped it for a manual one without it.
You may be able to block the outlets on the auto one.its seperate from the coolant flow through the rad.
