Most cages state that they're for non-sunroof models only - what is it that actually prevents them from being fitted to a sunroof model? And if the sunroof is removed and a sheet welded in are they then ok to fit?

It's the tray/cage that the sunroof retracts into thats the problem. If it's removed then there is no problem, it's what most poeple do. There are a few cages that do fit with the sunroof, i think Saftey devices do a specific one, or used to.

Thanks for the reply. Is it a ballache to remove or relatively painless? Cheers

It is a bit of a ballache but as long as you take your time and be careful not to damage the roof skin it is all good.

you could just cut the sunroof tray back where the cage passes through it. wouldnt be as neat as a full sunroof-ectomy, but quick and dirty for a drift/cheep track slag thats destined to be scrapped at the end.

may be a pain to remove the sunroof tray but think of it as a weight saving.

I had an omp bolt in full cage in a 4 door and left the electric sunroof in and all was ok. It took a few hours of adjusting to get it to fit but its possible.

Get yourself a spot weld drill and a angle grinder and you'll have it out in 30 mins. Then you could either rivet or weld a plate on in place of the sun roof.

Another job I need to do on my track slag. Cut out sunroof tray and weld in sunroof.

Forgive me if this sounds stupid. Would it not be a good idea to stitch in a sheet whilst the tray is still in the car. The roof must be stronger with the tray still in place. You have the perfect template (the sunroof) Once you have stitched in the panel then remove the tray from underneath? Just an idea. Might not work.

Ok this might be a good option then, mine's a 4 door too. I know lots of people sniff at them but tbh it's made stripping the car very easy so far having the extra access

Yeah the 4 door was great. Used to drive it to the circuit, race wheels on the back seats and in the boot. Hammer it all day then drive back. Biggest benefit of the 4 door was the ability to use the back seat, well floor if you get what I mean.

Currently building a 2 door none sunroof e30 with an e36 2.8 and m3 evo front hubs and brakes plus a load of other bits. I do miss my 4 door though. Great car that loved a beating. Get a omp cage and enjoy.
