Get rid and fit a shorter belt, GSF will sell you a belt by length now

Yeah, even less strain on your engine which can only be a good thing even if only slight

I don't know the measurement mate but dan might.
Suggestion..... Get a tape measure out and go arround the relevent pullies (missing the pas pump) to get a rough guide.

Go round the pullies with string and then measure the string, dont forget to make an allowance for the tensioner

For an M50, no powersteering, but with the idler pulley.
56.25" is about the right length.

Id sssume an M52 uses the same belt?

I'v just measured the pulley's on my M52 without the power steering pump,
and the measurement iv got is
**edit it's 1415mm NOT 1115 edit**
and while i was doing that, it got me thinking...
do i really need to include the tensioner??
i did but..
with it being a fairly chunky ribbed belt, i dont think it would spit it's self off
if it was tight enough in the first place???

Not a bad idea to lose the PAS pump - however, when they aren't loaded they only take minimal power to drive them (about 0.1 kW if I remember). Don't that BMW thought a lot about power assistance and the valving in the pump is designed to reduce assitance at higher speeds so it might be a backward step to get rid of the system. Also the rack durability may be compromised without a pump pushing fluid through it...
You must never run your belt without a tensioner - the forces transmitted through the belt are huge and vary a lot throughout the turn of the crank as the firing pulses put a torsional through the front and rear of the crank and ultimately through the belt and clutch. As the belt is glass fibre and nylon reinforced, these pieces of glass and nylon will delaminate within the belt with time and the belt becomes slacker and slacker - the tensioner is there to take up that slack.
Hope that helps!
Cheers,
Mike

Ill be keeping the tensioner! My rack is a proper manual one so it should make no difference if i loose the pump right?Mikey_Boy wrote:Not a bad idea to lose the PAS pump - however, when they aren't loaded they only take minimal power to drive them (about 0.1 kW if I remember). No issues if it's a proper manual rack...
