Check out pages 3 and 6 for some of the bulkhead action by Hartge to fit the donk!staley_turbo wrote:Slap me for being stupid, but i thought this engine was factory fitted to this car? So there shouldn't be any clearance issues?

it was factory fitted to an M5 , it's a bit of a juggle/squeeze to pop it into an M3 shell but no doubt Theo will manage it...staley_turbo wrote:Slap me for being stupid, but i thought this engine was factory fitted to this car? So there shouldn't be any clearance issues?

Yeah, I think everyone was surprised to see how bad the bulkhead was. The chassis rail which had been reduced in thickness to allow fitment of a standard e28 m5 air filter housing was even worse though!

Just tried the M3 and M5 servos in place to get an idea of any fitment issues there might be with either version. As you can see, the M5 version places the fluid reservoir right in the way of inlet of the plenum. Not a real problem as I could easily fit a remote reservoir. The M3 version fits ok and gives about 13mm clearance to the plenum. Saying this, I to think the offside of the engine needs raising which will push the plenum closer to the servo - will have to take another look once I've wrestled the engine into the correct position.

No it's going to be one of these two Jason, probably the M5 version as it makes sense to me to effectively have a complete e34 m5 brake system on the car.
I can use proper BMW parts for the remote reservoir conversion, I'd just need to make a bracket for it.
1x 34321112399 brakefluid reservoir (2002Tii)
2x 34321102282 brake pipe elbows to go into grommets in the mastercylinder
2x 34311121911 o-ring (grommets) for the mastercylinder. These have a smaller inner diameter hole than existing ones so that the elbows can fit snuggly
1x 21521163714 cloth braided hose from elbows to reservoir

Is that similar to the 325ix servo?
I've often wondered about fitting one of those

Yeah it's the same part number as a 325ix servo, different master cylinder though.

cool
I've wanted to try one of these for a while, partly for the novelty value and partly to give a bit more room around the heater hoses etc

That's a squeeze!
After more faffing around manipulating the anchor into the correct position I'm coming to the conclusion that neither servo is really viable with a standard plenum, so looks like I'll stick with the original modified plenum with M3 servo and master cylinder.
One last option would be to consider a clio servo as used in various engine conversions. Anyone got the measurements for one of these? A pic would be good too please.

As small as that? That would definitely work (famous last words) my M5 servo is approximately 250mm and the M3 servo 270mm.

Is it a straight fit or is molestation required?
I suppose your plenum is further over because you have a fairly thick adaptor plate between the M30 head and the throttle bodies?

Its pretty much a straight fit and yes the plate is about 20mm thick. But even with the smaller servo, the plenum has had to be modified and the heater matrix pipes are very tight.

Don't get your knickers in a twist ladies, it's only a brake servo! I'd argue that an unmolested inlet plenum (which is a tuned component of the intake system) is preferable to an original brake servo.
Saying that, I'm very lazy and the thought of wrestling with a clio brake servo in a muddy scrapyard doesn't really appeal. I'll probably do something else on the car and return to this quandary at a later date.

Sorry Desmond
I have arranged to get a custom radiator made for it, it's working out only £50 dearer than a new radiator from BMW and will be more efficient. Same fitment as the standard rad but with a thicker twin core.

I replaced one of the heated mirrors the other day, the old one was open circuit.
I also spent fecking ages going through the wiring and came to the conclusion that Hartge didn't have a fucking clue. Except for the speed limiter removal device - that was done nicely
274km/h crash here I come.
