Over heating touring

Hello peeps. Just need a bit of help with my touring. It over heats and pushes the water out of the expansion tank. Either through the overflow pipe or when the cap is off out the cap hole. The car is a E30 320i touring on a G plate. I also get water out of a gasket on the inlet manifold but this only happens when its running. I have changed the thermostat so far and will be cheking the rad early this week. Any help would be very greatfully rieceived.

Sorry to break such bad news on your first post, but it sounds like your water system is being over pressurised. Either your water pump has grown a gearbox and is spinning 4 times faster than it should be, or your head gasket or head are likely to be at fault. Could well be a head off job. Take the inlet manifold off first as that might give you a few more clues.

Did you bleed the air out if the water level got really low ?

Does your heater make lots of constant hot air ?

does it cool down whilst driving ,warming up at standstill-bleed-check viscous coupling?

if its the head i have a mint 320 head here

The engine warms up from cold holds on half way for a few min then off it goes into red then big puddle of water by passenger door. It does the same when moving. I have bleed the system using the bleed screws and heater matrix top pipe but still does it.

Hopefully i wil whip head off on fri and check the gasket and head then.


How much for the head if my one has gone?
