That looks awesome. I've just read the entire thread and have been in stitches as your comments on the gearbox change; I do sympathise but when you said it looked like you were fornicating with the car and then had to have 3 fags I almost fell of my chair!

As someone who isnt as much of an expert yet on the variants, I know that the M5 engine was different (an S38). Would this be another alternative to the Alpina B10 for the e30?

Wish my local breakers yard would come up with something like that though!

Standard ratio is iirc 9:1, with a 1mm skim it should give 9.8:1. I think im going to leave it be @ 10.6:1 8)

This engine is Aug 88 so not sure if its a non cat.

Realboss, The S38 would be an alternative but i wouldnt tackle one, for one the bonnet wont shut so you have to lower the subframe also im guessing its even heavier than an M30.

Ir it's an early one Lee, I doubt it would have be catted.

Thanks Lee, that is interesting. So, looks like I had better join the queue for a B10 like yours!!! Problem is, if it's in an E34 that is half decent I wont have the heart to break it...will have to stay in close contact with breakers and give em plenty of bribes in the hopes that one day...

Will have to get along to one of the meets at some point and drool  over your motor. Cheers bud.

if the price is reasonable, for the E21, I know your engine is good, don't want to go buy another with no known history

B10 Alpina from Ebay now acquired. I had spotted this before you mentioned it Lee, so am just as much a Gooner.

Have verified that it is a genuine B10 with high lift cams etc. Will validate serial numbers when I pick up, but from speaking with the chap it sounds like it may be worth salvaging rather than breaking. As I am someone who wouldnt break a complete fairly rare car on a whim, I will first need to evaluate this and see if it is beyond being cost effective to get back on the road.

Anyway keep you posted and if I do end up extracting the engine I will be in touch! 8)

Update.

With the bordom of the Christmas hols i decided to freshen up the throttle body, i used a can full of carb cleaner to get rid of the gunk then removed the butterfly and got to work.

Im not 100% sure but ive been told these Alpina donks had the TB opened up, some say they have and some say they are standard :? either way the bore is a tad under 69mm.

Armed with the Dremel i got to work, polished the inside of the TB till it was like a mirror then the butterfly got the same treatment, partially striped i gave it a lick of silver paint, then put it all back together.

I took some pics but they are with my old camera so the pics dont do it justice :(

The dilema is i have a tiny plaque that came with the engine that goes on the edge of the TB

Here's a pic...

It looks a bit 'in yer face' in the pic but once its bolted to the inlet mani i dont think it'l be that noticable....what you think?

Very nice work mate. I reckon you will be getting there before me as have had a nightmare with DIY over Christmas so my B10 is still sat on the drive but hoping to get engine out this week. Will do the same as you clean it and paint it and spruce it up a bit.

Nice work on the throttle body it looks great. 8)

Keep you posted.

Mine wont be in for a while plus the rest of the car is in bits, sort of mini resto, you think your car is rot free till you start prodding :( its getting sorted though :D

The old engine will be out by the end of the month, im planning to get everything done by the end of Feb 8)

Im on schedule 8)

Image

Image

Its ready to pull out, everything underneath is undone and all i need to do up top is disconnect the rad (10 min job) then its out 8)

With the M3 system off i decided to cut the resonator open as when i shook it it was making a rattling/tinkling noise, plus i wanted to know what was inside there :)

Resonator is arrowed red

Image

This gives that 'howl' noise at full chat 8) (the box is hollow with perforated tubes through it)
Anyway all that fell out was a couple of what looked like dried up bits of exhaust paste, its going to my welder tomorrow to get stitched back up.

Next problem is finding some straps to go round the rear box as the M3 system has a single hanger right at the back, need to find straps this size or cut up some 325i ones :(

looks a lot nicer than my scorpion M3 exhaust :)

forklift damage from the M3 breaker it came from

I've had a look abut can't find any pics of my rear hanger... anyway I used the M3 hanger and made up a bracket that bolts onto the shell using the rear bumper mounting bolts you can see on the floor:
Image

Just a cut of 1.5" angle with the upper part of the M3 hanger welded on: the lower half is shown here still bolted to the back box.
Image

possible all a bit anal but i thought i'd use that rather than the strap type hangers :)

Its an M30 535i overdrive gearbox with a 3.73 LSD which was a tad short even for the standard M30, really with the Alpina lump it needs a 3.46 (or lower)

The B6 3.5 and B6S 3.5 which used an identical engine to the one you have source used a dog leg direct 1.1 drive 5th gearbox and a 2.79 diff which meant a 0-60 of 6 seconds and over 150 mph.

A 3.46 would be a nice all rounder with the over drive box.

The TB on the Alpina engine is deffo a standard one, checked the B6 parts catalouge and the part number is a BMW one, not Alpina specific.
