How to check a year of an engine

This has probably been asked a million times, but how do you check what engine is in a E30, i know its a 2.5, but i don't know year of manufacturer

If the engine is original to the car, entering the last digits of the VIN in the Real OEM website will tell you month and year of manufacture.
