My dad phoned me today and asked me to come outside and have a look at his e36.

The problem is as follows. The battery has been discharging as it is not being used enough. He has had the battery off to charge it a couple of times. The most recent time, I took the battery off and put it on charge for him. He put it back on and took it out for a drive. When he got to mine the alarm horn was making an odd noise. Kinda like a grating and then a click, every second, as if the alarm was trying to sound, but there was not enough power in there. This sounds regardless of wether the car is locked or unlocked. The car starts straight away on the turn of the key.

We first tried disconnecting the battery positive. This stopped it, however once reconnected it started again. We then tried locking it, to arm the alarm, the disconnecting with the same result. We even tried to disconnect the alarm relay. This did not stop it however. The relay does not look like the other ones (see picture its the one on the far left of the picture-located under the drivers side fascia panel)

When I took the battery off for charging, the alarm sounded. I reconnected the battery, disarmed the alarm, left the car unlocked and disconnected. This time it came off without sounding. I then manually locked all the doors and the boot. I would assume all my old man did when reconnecting the battery was to unlock the boot and re-attach.

My theory: The internal power source for the alarm discharged itself while the battery was disconected and is trying to sound the alarm. Any suggestions, ideas? Can this be replaced/recharged?

If you take the alarm horn apart you will find, deep in its bowels, a D sized rechargable battery - maybe you can unsolder the connections and try recharging it.

Otherwise a trip to Zen Motors/Reclamet might be in order

Cheers Henna. You got the H plate quattroporte calypso jobby that was in Gravesend? Sure it was you who was interested?

Anyone any other ideas. If it is the case the battery is flat, should the mains and the central locking ecu tell the alarm to stop trying to sound?

Dread a trip to reclamet..... they are hopeless!

I had a very similar issue on the E60, i didnt drive the car over the last months and just let it sit in the yard, the battery died, so put it on charge, once connected, i kept getting a 'click' noise from the alarm... as the car was under warranty, i sent it back, and they had to replace the alarm siren as the backup battery was faulty

It maybe the same issue for yourself

Sounds like a similar issue. I will mention it to my dad. Anyone know how easy it is to replace an alarm siren?

It depends what alarm it has - is it a BMW dealer fit one? If it is, remove the glovebox, find the alarm ECU (it's the top one) and pull the plug out. Sorted.

I have done a little more research and it's a 3T alarm. Believe made by Sigma and also used on some subarus. There was a BMW forum that had loads of links to diagnosing/sorting the alarm but the bit I wanted to view I couldn't without signing up. Since signing up I haven't had the confirmation email so now can't view any of the site. Thanks for the input Andyboy but that's a bit of a bodge and I suspect my dad wants a fully functioning alarm.

He has taken it out for a run and the crispy scratchy noise has stopped, however the alarm no longer chirrups when locking/unlocking. Ideas??? Car still locks/unlocks fine however.

Henna you should bring said quattroporte to an ashford meet soon so I can perv! I need some e30 in my life

Another question actually while I remember, seems stupid but central locking functions fine one all doors except front passenger. Will not rise or fall with central locking? Relay or summat else?
