hello BMW guru's, the head gasket has just gone on my e30 325i sport. Im thinking of either swapping the engine or going for the 2.7 conversion. Can any 1 explain what the 2.7 conversion actually involves and what sort of price/power can be expected. Also any other engines which would slot in fairly easiliy. Any help would be great.

Cheers

Ravi,

A basic 2.7 will require an ETA crank, ETA rods and early 325i pistons. You then have machining of your block.

HOwever dont expect big gains from this alone.

Just the above will cost a fair bit because of the parts required in rebuilding the bottom end like piston rings, bearings etc etc.

Why not just whack on your head again and turbo it? It will slaughter a 2.7 - you'll be chasing E34 M5's and winning!

Its also bolt on so can be reversed at any time.

IN reality a 2.7 isnt that much faster than a highly tuned 2.5. INfact a very highly tuned 2.5 is quicker than a basic 2.7.

Turbocharging looks like a simple bolt on affair in the first instance, but the devil's in the details as they say and all the little odds and sods that need doing take up mucho time :(

Sal you make the turbo conversion sound too easy, you go into no detail whereas you clearly point out the deffects of going 2.7 route.

Yeah sorry, should have gone into a bit more detail.

Turbo conversion still less work than a 2.7 with much more power though.

Hi,

I haven't posted on here in a while, and should really sort out my dented wing before even thinking of engine mods etc, but i the idea of a turbo is just great! lol. Anyone got any idea of the cost of turboing the m20 then?
