My daily car is a 2000 328Ci SE Manual with 222500 miles on it!

The oil is as clean as the oil in my 60000 mile E30 325i and it hasn't used a drop since i did a oil service 3000 miles ago using a genuine filter and Castrol SLX 0W30.

The engine, gearbox and diff are bone dry and have no signs of ever leaking. No rattles, smoke whines etc from either of these components.

Its had a clutch just before i bought it (on 217000 miles) and an alternator.

The suspension is very worn on it and has Apex 40/50mm springs which have sagged and are now like 50/70mm! :o all on standard BMW Sachs shocks which look like they could be the originals. They are being replaced with an Eibach pro kit (25/15mm) and Bilstein B4's next weekend.

I've also replaced the normal E46 "wear and tear" items like the front control arm bushes, a front wheel bearing and a rear ABS sensor.

The car was peanuts to buy as it was a trade in at work but it has a decent spec of,

xenons
Electric memory seats
M sport body kit
18" style 32's
Individual Saffron Nappa leather (sadly comfort seats)
Anthracite headlining

I'm unsure of how far i'll go with it as the car is of little value but then it is also a blank canvas for an interesting project.

I have an interest in high mileage BMW's as they are a testament of how good they can be and it would be interesting to see how long/far this car with last.

This is my 3rd E46, the other 2 being a 330Ci convertible with 60k and an Alpina B3S convertible with 43k.

In my opinion the E46 is a better bet in terms of build quality than the current E9x series and is on par with E36's in terms of build quality with the only down side is more complex electronics which may hinder the DIY mechanic when diagnosing faults.

As many of you know i work for a BMW dealer as a technician so i see these (and all sorts of BMW's) day in day out so have good insight as to what goes wrong with these.

Being a poor E30 owner I take it the rear seats fold flat for the dog. Couldn't let him on leather he would eat it.
Through load and there for fold flat rear seats were and option on E46 saloons and standard on Coupes.

looks like I'll be visiting the more door one then, only 155K so far but with a few meets in the early part of the year and a short  tour of Europe to see some old friends should help that along.

Cheers Barry was thinking something must happen due to the split on the rear seats in the boot pic.

Need a practical for the daily Pete. I would go for a touring but whatever comes up first to be honest. If I have to downgrade when I lose the co. car then something like this for 2k would be ideal while I put the missus in a nice late Golf as a replacement for the astra.

Yes the e36 is more DIY friendly but you cannot stay stuck in the dark ages for ever when the later cars are this cheap.

I facelift E46'ed 320d SE Touringed myself about 2 years ago and they are unbeatable for the money. My brother had an E36 Sport Touring and I prefer the E46 as a daily as the E36 is still too basic and raw - though much more fun to drive. It literally is a blend of E30 and E46.

As far as DIY, I have retrofitted / repaired on my E46 with basic tools:

Sports Seats, Electric Memory AND Heated all wired in and synced to two different keys. (Tan leather Pete :D)
Xenon headlights.
BlueTooth with steering wheel control.
iPod/iPhone with steering wheel control.
Replaced TCA bushes.
Replaced drivers door.
Repaired drivers window mech.
Multiple services including Crankcase/Turbo breather.
Installed EGR Valve bypass.
Installed AC Schnitzer Diesel Tuning box.

I have to say, I find it much easier to work on than the E30 because all the fasteners are in perfect nick, no rust and just brilliantly packaged.

Would totally recommend working on an E46 as DIY - unless one of the many control modules screw up which will need replacing and coding - only at BMW or hi-end Independents.

E46s are decent chariots. Very refined, nice to drive and one of BMW's best interiors. Well engineered but clearly built to a cost - matt paint finish in shutlines, crappy carpets compared to previous generation 3 series'. I've had a 51 plate coupe for nearly 2 years and its been probably the nicest car I've owned. Despite being low mileage when I got it (59K) it had numerous faults in its first year which thankfully were fixed under warranty (£1500 worth of work 8O ). The second year has been problem free so far. Its MOT time next month so hopefully this will continue!

Coupes and Tourings (especially in Sport form) are lovely looking cars IMO that still look reasonably modern. Never liked the saloons though - they look bloated and really dated IMO, especially the prefacelift models. The E36 saloon is admittedly bland but its a lot sleeker design. The E46 is just an E36 on a diet of full fat Coke & KFC with more electrical issues.
