Selection of M50 questions to improve current install

Hi All,

I'm currently using an M50 touring as a daily, however I didn't do the conversion myself and slowly going over the work to make it 100%.

I have a few questions.

1) What top hose are you guys using, I noticed that the one on my conversion requires replacing as it has been touching the FEAD belt.

Is there a silicon one I can use?

2) Is it recommended to install a metal thermostat housing? and if so where is best to purchase it?

3) Will the M50 Vanos have a plastic impeller water pump? If so where is best to get a metal impeller example.

4) What spark plugs are recommended for the M50 vanos?

5) When she is cold the M50 doesn't run well when throttle is applied (Idles fine), however she runs very well when up to tempurature. Any ideas on what could cause this?


Sorry for all the questions but I thought it would be better than starting numerous threads.

I'm using an e36 325i top hose cut either end to fit.

It is a reccomendation to fit metal thermostadt housing yes- GSF for this possibly

All m50 engines have plastic impellar water pumps and it is highly recommended to change this for a kwp metal impellar type!!

Im pretty sure i've got an e36 328i top rad hose and it fits without any trimming with my e36 328i aircon spec rad.

I'm using the M20 rad and had to cut the e36 top hose down a bit, it only just clears that belt. I found I could move one of the pulleys a bit to get a few more mm whilst keeping enough tension.

I'm also using those NGK's.

Check the coolant temp sensor re. the cold running issue. Google should tell you what the cold resistance should be.

I use a cut down M20 hose, the one that routes over the distributor, but you can use E36 hoses
ECP sell alloy stat housings and the KWP waterpump which is the best
Any spark plugs will do really, they are a common fitment used on all sorts of other manufacturers engines
Id just to buy a new blue temp sensor

They do? All I can find is the plastic ones, and I've changed two of those in the last year.
Anyone know their part number?
