I've had the car 6 months (318i 1990 M40 engine), and have noticed with the weather getting colder than when the car is fully warmed up the temperature guage only just comes out of the blue area.
Changed the thermostat and the car overheated really quickly, took it out checked it and it was working. In frustration put the old one back in. Which is now better, but still overheats after a period of time, though not immediately as with the new thermostat.
The viscous fan is running or at least seems to be running ok.
Is this an airlock? how do I get rid of it? Is there a bleed screw or something?
Overheating 318i-airlock???

when i replaced my rad i had problems gettin rid of an air leak when i refilled it. in the end i took the top hose off and filled it up by puttin water straight down it. when the water had got to the top of the hose i quickly put it back on before loosing too much of the water. while i was doing this i also filled the rad as much as i could. might help with the air lock if it is that! but i did have the same symptoms when i could not get rid of my air lock. Good luck!

16V IS engine!!!

air lock's in the heater circuit at the back.
Make sure the heater is full on and release air from the heater hose where it connects to the bulkhead.

How do i release the air from the heater hose,
is it the top or bottom hose?
and does it have have to be hot/cold?
or with the engine running/stoped.
thanks.

Fill the header tank to the top, unscrew the clip on the top hose and pull the hose off to the end of the spigot, so that the air and a little water comes out. Engine cold and stopped is OK.
Fillinf modern engines with coolant is an art. It will take up to a week to get all traces of air out of the cooling system.

ok, I did the top heater hose and also put some water down it, and the same with the top rad hose as per previous post.
now with engine hot all hoses hot and heater blowing hot, the temp gauge justs comes out of the blue zone and stays there, so im back to square one.
air locks are a real problem, but thanks to all who helped, next weekend i will try to put the new thermostat in (again) so look out for more posts
