i have replaced the two fuel lines in the engine bay there is no smell of petrol and i cant see any leaks whats going on surely i should get more miles from 40 odd quid of petrol :?

yours sits at 30mpg

im lucky if mines above 20 ever

the last 2 or 3 320s ive had have all been somilar on economy

but my old bplate 320i auto that i had a couple years ago was a hell of a lot better on juice and i often got 90+to a tenna

im guessing its the cost of fuel thats made such a big difference

and the 325i i had last year also gave me 80/90 to a tenna

thinking of putting my 323 engine in
even that was better last time i drove her last year did 112miles to bout 12quid on a mad dash from nottingham to leeds

I was getting similar figures so resorted to getting these cleaned and will see how it goes next week on the mpg. So far it's running smoother, starts up a bit quicker and the exhaust has even stopped pissing on the floor

Hi all, filled up yesterday having done 351 miles on last tank full ! Thats my best return yet. :D

I think i've mentioned it before that I have an ekotek power valve fitted, it doesnt really improve bhp that much but it does also claim to improve fuel consumption and i think 351 miles out of 55 litres is pretty good going.

It's a standard 320 (motronic ecu).

I'm still in two minds as to weather it was worth gettting them cleaned as i still have two that are noisy and i'm not happy about it because the twit at the garage said they were all fine. So when i asked him if the flow rate was the same on them all and he agreed, i take it he was talking bollocks then as well

But Ԛ£125 to have them cleaned compared to over double that for a new set i can live with it for now, provided it makes a difference.
I'll work out how well it's doing next week after i've had the CO re-set and like a twit i serviced it as well so now i won't know how much of the improvment is down to the injectors and how much is due to a new air filter and plugs.

I always get about 300 miles to a tank but I do most of my driving at 30mpg with the odd thrash now and then.

Shouldn't be any worse MPG, as long as you change the diff as well.
That's the trouble with 320s - 325 MPG with 318 (maybe slightly better) performance. Only thing going for then is the straight six sound and smoothness.

i've just ran out of fuel in the project car, again!
but i dont mind as i want to try shell optimax for the track day, e39 m5 users swear by it, we'll see.
my 330d, the last time i used it on a run, half urban, half motorway, it returned 52mpg.
i wasn't trying to get a high mpg as i was in convoy to a track day.
i think if i was trying, i could of got 60mpg.

I certainly notice a difference with the way I drive (1988 320i, 113,000 miles). I got nearly 40mpg when sticking rigidly to 70mph on the motorways en-route to the Nurburgring (And also did Lancaster - Brighton on less than Ԛ£40, inlcuding a diversion through Wembly). Anything else though and it drinks. Economy drops quite significantly by increaseing motorway speed to 80mph. And I got 6 laps (< 80 miles) of the 'ring on a full tank!

Also check where your fuel filler pipe goes into the tank. They can rot here and leak slightly when the tank is full.

The 325i is actually slightly more economical than the 320i (According to the owner's manual). Makes me wonder why they ever made the 320i  Its slower, yet less economical, with only marginal performance benefit over the far more economical 318i.

thats good MPG's from your 320i!

reason the 320i is thirsty is because it has a "flathead" combustion chamber to increase torque, as opposed to the 325i more efficient "hemi" design.

as for the 320i being " unrequired" it was originally designed as a tax/insurance break model-has lower tax implications in several EU countries due to smaller capacity and is a lower insurance group.

To get this lower tax and insurance rating BMW "strangled" the 320i to some extent. If allowed to breathe properly (e.g Big Bore Throttle Body (BBTB) some useful gains can be found.

Plus gotta love the smoothness of the m20b20!!!

I jest you not Daz ! I've always got over 300 since I've had the Ekotec valve on it. 325i Motorsport Convertible travelling 60+ miles a day on A46 (fast road !) always exceed 100mph at least twice a day so i drive it like it should be driven, I dont think i ever got more than 260 miles out of my previous tintop sport that I had. Must be lucky I guess... :P

maybe your engines just in better condition and i have fitted the 2.5 throttle body which must affect it quite a bit.
the most worrying thing is when i had it checked out the garage said the mix was way too LEAN i nearly collapsed.
