Took 1 and a half hours to do 7 minute journey this afternoon, most people are absolute d***heads in the snow.I was quite pleased with myself untill i got to a roundabout near my home and there waiting for me was strictly come driving on ice!!!!!!! Got past that lot and 100 yards from my front door the daily(E46 Ci) decided even with traction control it was going to spit its dummy out,and not go up the smallest of inclines.Well i left it,and hopefully itll still be there in the morning in one piece. As i was trudging home i thought that neither of my E30s would have done it either and why hadnt i bought the four wheel drive E30 i looked at in the summer!!!!!!!!!!.

Sounds like even the iX would have been no good if it had summer tyres on.

I'm surprised how many X5s and Range Rover Sports I've seen floundering the last couple of weeks...........

Winter tyres FTW.

And, before anyone asks, I haven't got any either. But I will next year.
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

Well now being an e36 estate owner my first snow encounter yesterday left with me in 360 spins.
Still i did have it in 2nd and floor it round the corner still no way as predictable as the e30 was no frigging way.

My 540i tried its hardest to screw me earlier. I live 2 miles off the nearest gritted road, but there is only one semi noticeable incline.

Imagine my shock after building up a good bit of speed round the left hander and over the cattle grid, there was a fucking BMW mini floundering in the snow stuck at 45 degrees to the road. Causing me to stop behind 3 other cars on said semi noticable incline. Cue 2 minutes of me swearing at the wanker in the mini for getting stuck. On idle it was wheel spinning. :(

Somehow I got going in the end and got home. It is still the worse car I have ever driven in the snow. If I hadn't got home I was sorley tempted to wack my Tesco shopping round the mini drivers head.

Very hard to get hold of at the moment. Spoke to one tyre wholesaler yesterday who told me that most of the UK stock is sold already, and the manufacturers aren't intending to produce further stock for this 'season'. Told me to ring back in January. . . . .

Most of the likely tyre websites are showing out of stock on all their winter rubber.

E46 ARE shite in the snow, but it helps if you turn the traction control off (but it's still your fault if you crash). With the TC on they just wallow from side to side as the power swaps from wheel to wheel. On the later ones with DSC you have to switch it off, then press and hold the button again until another light comes on yellow (I think it's the handbrake light) which is the "really really off" mode. Then you can at least have direct control of the back wheels. Sadly you'll usually still be just selecting the amount of zzzZZZZZZZzzzz noise instead of going anywhere :(

I bought a set of smaller (16 inch) wheels for the wifes e46 and put a set of (narrower!) avon winter tyres on it, completely transformed it, I couldn't believe the difference 8O

yep, to be fair, ours has the staggered 17" motorsport rims. In summer it's a beast, in the winter it's a handy lockable outdoor fridge.

If you want to stay in an E30,iwould say yes.Ive never driven one but people tell me they are sluggish in the dry, dont quite know what that means tho.Maybe 4 wheel drive 5 series might be answer,or just buy one the day (if it arrives again)the thermometer reaches 75 degrees!

Turbo iX :)

Just wait till summer and pick up a big old 4x4 from someone who is sick of the fuel bills, MOT it, SORN it and keep it until winter.
