As most of you probably know my non vanos m50b25 was verging on death by timing chain before i put my m52b28 in. I want to strip it down becuase i've always wanted to strip an engine down anyway. The engine has no sump, no inlet, the wiring loom is scrap (bits donated to the m52 :D) and obviously it has a knackered chain.

So... do i strip it down and then make something awesome like a coffee table out of it. Or do i rebuild it as a 2.5 becuase i'd like to give that ago too - but i dont want to go back to a 2.5. Not much point bunging a 2.8 bottom end on and i'd rather have a vanos iron block if i was to do anything like that anyway. I'd love a turbo but insurance probably won't agree!

Discuss :D

Selling bits is always a possiblity. Or more likely is that it would end up getting stashed away becuase i can't be bothered with timewasters.

As i said, i'd rather have a vanos engine if i was to put a bigger bottom end on. But yeah it would be possible.

It would have to be a road engine becuase the e30 is my daily. I'm thinking more and more of doing it into something like furniture becuase i either want a vanos engine or to be a few years older for the insurance to be resonable for what i would like.

Strip it

Prep the iron block ready for 30lt bottom end. there is a couple of ways to do this.
Then bolt your vanos head and sump etc off your m52 and you are at my spec give or take some s52 cams and enlarged tb

Best of both worlds;

Strip and re-build the head ready for your proposed turbo project.

Strip and paint the block, then use as a coffee table in the short term.... :D

I feel such a twat now :hammer: You used an e46 330i bottom end and an m52 loom + ecu iirc? Because this engine will need a new loom anyway :chuckle:

Oh and dezzy i already have an enlarged tb, but the butterfly valve is fooked so i need to obtain / make a new one.

No standard 84mm M52 I think? I think the B30 has the same size pistons. A 330 crank in my donk would be nice.

M54b30 pistons look to be 84mm according to an excel document i have. It also says that the torque from a m54b30 is 214lb/ft, mines already got more than that :chuckle:

Thats true. It also appears that the m50b25 pistons are 84mm so i presume i could use them with the m54b30 crank?

Oh yeh M50 and M52 pistons are the same different rings though. It would be a shame not to fit bigger pistons. M43 pistons are 85mm witch would give you 3.2ish with a 330 crank. Bit of a block skim at the same time and you will have a blockbuster.

I thought you needed custom crank stuff for 3.2's - isnt that what alpina did? Anyway i think you guys may have made a desision for me :chuckle:

Anyway, got a few weeks off from friday and i need to remove the head of the engine from the block to get it home from the garage and begin the uber long task of buggering something up 8O

Put them both together and what would you get?

A cracking engine I reckon. Basically Dan alpina lump.

I am using M52 remapped on my S50B30 pistoned M52. If you could run S52 loom and Ecu that would work? Dan?

The comparisons I've had from those that have driven them is that 3rd gear and floor it is like flooring a 2.7 in 1st.

A 150 shot of gas will liven the lazy turd up anyway.

Anyway, we would have moved on from fossil fuels before I get that one done, if it even gets started :D

Ive just checked out bmwfans.info and it says that the m43 piston is an 84mm piston ( http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E36/S ... t_pistons/ )
but the m44 318is engine is a 85mm piston instead ( http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E36/S ... t_pistons/ ) Any ideas what conrods to use?

Just incase i do happen to fall over some of these bits in the mean time :)

Could you build it up with two 2.7 conversions? :)

My excel document i have agrees with what you said though about the m43 pistons being 85mm. I wanted to check incase the iS engine had decent pistons in it :D

I'll send him a PM in good time if he doesnt see this first. As i said im in no rush atm, and it'll take me forever to do it anyway :)

Yeah i've seen the shricks on ebay - i fancy having a vanos head though tbh. It would be rude not to cam it while the engine is in bits.
