m50 parts list

Haven't managed to find a definitive parts list of everything needed for an m50 conversion so have been putting one together myself. After a fair bit of research and robbing some of Jozi's m52 parts list (posted in this section), i've come up with the following and am hoping that people can tell me if i've missed anything or if that seems to be everything; last thing i want is to collect all these bits only to go to do the conversion and find i'm missing something simple

The engine i've bought is an e36 325i m50, and i'm planning on using my current m40 gearbox along with m20 clutch, lightened m20 fly, e30 320i prop.


*325 Clutch - Sachs - non aircon from ecp 641110100 or 641110090 ?? (OTTO - 140 + VAT)

For e36 rack swap (currently non-PS e30 rack):

*e34 UJs x 2
*steering spline (DanThe)
*new hoses made up (i have the specs for these)

for the rack swap, will the e30 items work fine with M50 conversion or would i be better off getting them from another model?

Open to suggestions/input

mine needed a 20mm spacer, and according to danthe most of the ones he's done have been around 20mm! for the record, i have driven mine around the block and the brakes are shit-hot!, and not locked on as i can push the car to

also while your there mate stick a z3 shifter on there to. well worth the £50 from bmw imo. 60 per cent less throw and no slopy stick either

I already have a z3 shortshifter in my yoke, that's the only reason it's not on the list

Other than those two items, does everything else seem to be present on the list? Am i missing anything, or have i put anything unnecessary on there?

no worries mate.....

e30 brown temp sensor from m20 engine,
spiggot bearing is fine, all m20 spiggots are 12mm!
unless you already have one.... a lambda sensor for the m50, gsf @ £65 or.... £165 from the stealers LOL

other than that your list is good to go pal

Happy days, list updated to include e30 brown temp sensor and lambda.

Fingers crossed if anyone else like me is gonna do an m50 conversion they'll now find this (hopefully complete lol) parts list and save themselves the time it's taken to put it together so they can spend more time sourcing parts instead

Sweet looks good I've been doing the same thing tonight ready for visit to the stealers. Just thought I'd add e28 m5/535 engine mounts. Also would I need lambda sensor if I'm doing m52 swap or is it present on the e36 doner??

The e28 mounts are already on the list thanks though
The donor should have a lambda on it or it likely wouldn't be running right

m50 engines run 1 lambda sensor and m52 runs 2! one in each of the 2 banks on the mani's.
so if your doing the m52 swap make sure you grab em both

as for a concise list..... good work mate and im glad i could help.
i had to source all my parts from all over the shop, made a list the size of an A4 sheet of paper but due to fitting mine and getting it running ect ive not really had time to put it up.

Is the Renault Clio brake servo an essential mod or is it just to improve braking in general?!

The clio servo is essential mate! Its needed due to clearance issues when fitting m50 engine.
Clio servo is smaller in diameter than the e30 servo but is dual diaphram so when fitted it will give better pedal feel and improved assistance when braking.

I have pics in my progress thread in this section which may make it clearer for you.

Does anyone know if - 61318376440 - is the right part number for the e36 318ti temp switch?
I just checked it on realoem, but just in case i'm getting mistaken over it..

What temps do you want? I use 61 31 8 361 787 which has the early plug

what prop should i get for mine? they say 325 but here you say 320? mine will be m50 on a m42 box

With m42 box iirc 325i prop is correct, i'll be using an m40 box which i'm told should use the 320i prop. I'm sure someone else'll be along shortly to confirm what i've said or to correct me

Sorry to hijack te post, but i am gathering parts for the 24v conversion, and i have a few questions:

The car is a 320i touring with a dead engine and a brand new LUK clutch..Can i fit the 320i flywheel and clutch on an m40 or m42 box?

I have a 2.5 m50 without wiring, and a 2.0 with wiring and ECU, both non-vanos! Is it possible to use that on the 2.5, and chip the ECU?

M20 flywheel can be used, but you either need to grind bits off the sump (see e30-dk's project thread as he has pics of what area he was grinding), or you need to get the flywheel skimmed/lightened. And yes, the clutch should be fine to use also

whats the better engine to get VANOS or NON VANOS

VANOS returns slightly better torque and economy than non-VANOS. I've only driven cars with VANOS M50 engines before so can't honestly compare the two but what i stated before is what it looks like on paper. HTH

thanks for the help, gotta start my hunt for a m52 engine now then and all the parts that i need, bring on some 6 pot power!

Never driven one, search on youtube for "m50b25 e30" and you should find a video to give you an idea though

Also, afaik all m52's have VANOS. However, I'm not 100% sure on that so you may want to get it confirmed.

This. Mine worked ok on an m40 gearbox, but DO NOT fit one to an m50/2 box. Go for a sachs one
