These creations ARE lethal.

I have created and owned S50/S52/S54/S62 BMW Z1s
And about to make an S85

Clearly they are fun. I would not do so otherwise. In the dry throttle control is much better then the M20, and the car is easier to handle.
But when all the original traction aids have been removed and the engine is in a shorter lighter and narrower body, adverse conditions are tricky eg rain.

I have sold a few of my conversions, two have been destroyed. When you build them you seem to know how they will handle.

Sad to see this car broken, but the insurance will pay. the parts will go on ebay and everyone will be happy..... so big deal.

Or have we never seen a crashed car before?

Glenn I know it's been moved on but alot of work went into that motor. I feel for you mate as it was a 'proper' car built by someone who knows there onions.

If the driver was speeding (it looks to me he was) then he is a lucky boy.

my point is everyone is quick to critisise this guy because he crashed a car, as if no one one this forum has ever crashed.

I do not condone driving fast in the wrong conditions, I just find it amusing that more than half the people so far have called him a knob, assumed he was speeding, assumed he cannot drive a powerful car (not a real slur on his ability as i doubt 99% of zoners could not handle a 500hp engine in a 25 year old car on wet or icy roads).

If the guy was driving like a cock then he got what he deserved, if not then why not give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he was involved in an accident and is unlucky.

Cheers mate, it was a great car. 500bhp, adjustable suspension and straight through pipes. It went and sounded brilliant 8)

It had this as well, which could be useful at times winkeye

ive been reading all of the posts on this topic and my view is rwd. after leaving the r5 gtt scene at around 20 i purchased a 325i and wrote it off after 10 days.lost control in the wet.
after that i learnt to respect and drive these old machines. any e30 is a handful in bad weather of any sort. let alone one with a v8.this guy has learnt fast and will appreciate his next chariot no doubt. :D

its true, the only problem is if he doesn't learn from his mistake which im pretty certain he will

My first post here so not gonna be surprised if I get flamed.
But I know the owner and saw the scene of the accident. The amount of damage to the e30 really does surprise me,unfortunately noone has posted pics of the clio, that there were 3 occupants of,pretty much unijured, obviously very shaken.
Basically the e30 caught the clio just in front of of the n/s/r wheel, the damage was limited to this area, obviously the wheel and tyre suffered damage and the rear quarter panel was dented, but we all know what french cars are like and you could probably do similar damage by running up and kicking it with your foot! The renault started up and drove onto the recovery truck and back off again at their depot.
I have crashed a couple of e30's and had been impressed at how they stood up to it,but this one amazes me. It really is difficult to believe both vehicles came from the same accident.
Obviously you all know the car,and are aware of what condition it was in,so it wasnt fatigue through rust that caused it to fold up like it has, this is especially evident now that the paint has cracked/peeled in various points,my only theory is that the stresses imposes on the shell by the immense amount of power being transmitted through it over time plus its age caused the weakness?
Really is hard to say but I do feel I had to point out that people shouldnt be so fast to judge without knowing any facts,I have heard claims of it travelling at ridiculus speeds upon impact but If this was the case I think everyone involved would no longer be with us.
Im sure Glenn would agree that getting this car up to 3 figure speeds on a relatively short bit of road in the current weather conditions was a bit of a feat in itself as the amount of wheelspin the car created meant the power had to be fed in fairly cautiously?
I should also point out that the owner is a pretty experienced driver and has owned his fair share of e30 M3's and is a true enthusiast of the Marque. Maybe he was going quicker than he should of been but I would definately say sub 50mph. Maybe the guy who started this also took pics of the clio? It would make it a little less of a witchhunt and may help to show the story a little more.

exactly....his mate said who was neither the driver nor passenger nor was probably at the scene.

dont get me wrong i am not justifying this crash or use or speed in the wrong place, my point is only that everyone is quick to critisise his driving and chastise his speeding....when i am sure over 99% of all zoners, myself included, have exceeded the speed limit and done something silly in a car at one point in their driving career.

Let's just agree that it was a terrible waste of a great car and be grateful that no one was seriously hurt.

i feel really bad for joe. I was gutted when i got the text. Not only has he lost his car and his savings tied into it but someone thought it suitable to post pics on here so everyone could shoot him down. I have no doubt of his driving skills. He has owned more m cars than i can remember and all of which have been kept immaculate and stayed in one piece. His last e30 was a 600bhp m3. The real prick is the driver of the clio that pulled directly out in front of it doing 40 mph. I'm amazed at how much the shell bent but the fact it only needs a shell, bumper and wishbone to get back on the street is testament to the speed he was going. All the mechanicals are perfect. I wish him all the best in putting it back together. Something to be said about 2foot curbs, walls wankers in french cars not lookin where they're going. and 25 year old stressed and probably bent and repaired e30 shells. It will be back. But this time better. I'm just glad he's ok.

Just thought id add that the reason the car looks so bent is purely because of where the impact was, it was taken right on the corner where there is very little strength so no energy was absorbed before it got to the front wheel which was pushed back into the A pillar and sill, if it was a square frontal you would be seeing something very different as the chassis leg would have done their job and absorbed the energy. The base of the A pillar, sill and floor on modern cars is beefed up considerably compared to e30's to help in this kind of impact, still fooks the shell but less damage to the occupants.
No longer self employed but still available for welding duties.

Think you,ll find the OP posted up pics because,
A. He wrongly believed that the car in question had been stolen.
B.Because he knew it had been built by a fellow member.
How does that make him a prick. ?

Agree on the fact that some may well have jumped
to conclusions to the circumstances of the crash but that,s people for you. Sure each and every one of us have made that
mistake before. Pretty sure most, if not all of us would love to see the car rebuilt too, and feel gutted for the owners loss.

I think the driver has been given a bit of harsh judgement on this thread, anyone can crash very easily, but then people start flaming him, saying he is this and that before they know the facts.
The poor guy has crashed his car, I bet he is gutted...but at the end of the day at least no one got hurt and there is still plenty e30s left to tear up the tarmac in the future :D
