well........
i got the news via text yesterday afternoon :(
and yes, i was a little upset to hear the news, but,
the car was sold and paid for, so it was joe's to do with as he wishes.
these are the first pics i've seen of it though.
i spoke to joe after i got home from work, he told me a car pulled out at a crossroads without stopping.
as long as everyone was 'ok',
the car.....is just a car

i suppose it was time to change the sig pic anyway

:( :( :( :( :(

That is gutting to see.

However it is quite common for somebody to spend years building a stunning car, to sell it on and have the new owner gradually ruin it or write it off.

A big wallet doesn't mean big driving ability.

Same thing happened to my old Mustang which I spent much time and money modding. The new owner wrote it off after four weeks of ownership. This led to the poor old Mussie ending it's life in a most undignified manor - the Top Gear boys got hold of it for their live MPH show and really trashed it :(

This was the car just before I sold it....

This was the car a few weeks ago after Top Gear purchased it from the breakers yard. It was only beyond economical repair so could have been put back on the road :(

Considering the speed we all think this happened at, the overall integrity of the passenger compartment does reassure me.

the car has nothing to do with me now, it was sold to someone a few weeks ago, although, i have shown interest with the owner for some parts, should he decide to buy it back and break it.

to be fair, the speed wouldnt have to be massive, someone driving straight into your path whilst you're doing 30mph with no chance to react could easily do that sort of damage. it looks like the main impact was just in front of the front wheel, meaning the wheel and lower a-pillar become the crumple zones instead of the bumper and front chassis rails that are designed to adsorb impacts.

just look at the damage done to modern cars in the 40mph deformable offset impact ncap tests. lower the speed a bit and offeset the barrier even more and you'd get pretty similar results.

sure, the onwer may well have been driving like a tosser, speeding, showing off etc but without knowing the circumstances it's a little unfair to jump to conclusions.

it's a sad sight whatever the cause though :(
cheers,

sorry, Harry, did you notice the roofline?

I appreciate where you're coming from but, there's no way a 30mph impact could create that.

obviously the car is low, so the ability to ride up over is lessened & thus transferring energy up the chassis to the roof. If that was the result of a 30mph impact, I'd sell your m3 in favour of a renault!

really?

look at the roofline of this e36 (a newer, stronger design than the e30) the crash is at 40mph, but the barrier strikes 50% of the width of the car so the front end is adsorbing a lot of the impact, which going by how lopsided the damage is didnt happen to the e30.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obdtYlqV ... re=related

the damage done to that e30 could easily have been done at an impact speed of less than 40mph imho.
cheers,

harry

sure, but pause at 5 seconds.. Take into account the test has crushable media which is held by an immovable wall representing a larger, more solid vehicle - the car the e30 hit was a clio which would be shunted away from the impact. It wasn't a square on, which allows the engine to transfer the energy through a much larger area but even so it doesn't represent a 25-30mph smash.

i love the way everyone is so self righteous when they assume another driver has crashed due to high speed, i am willing to bet a small amount of money that none of the arm chair commentators have ever exceeded 30mph.

Glenn clearly says someone pulled out, and driving into something very solid even at 30mph will damage a car like this, especially an older car that does not crease up and absorb the impact like a modern. i was rear ended while stationary in a 318is in Belgium, at less than jogging pace, it bent the exhaust and the roof... my point is E30's can crease.

Good to know the car occupants are OK, shame the car is now fit for some spares.

Thing is tho Mrlee
the guy driving it has admitted to driving fast,
so in theory, yeah it was caused by excessive speed,
if he got to that junction a bit later,
the clio would of been going up the road rather than pulling out on him,

and yeah your probably right some of us "armchair contenders" might have went over the speed limit
but what of it,

the guys a numpty for buying such a weapon and not knowing it's full potential,

he's only had it a couple of weeks,
there's no way he knew the car inside and out,
or knew it's capability's

as said before,
he probably went.........

"look at this lads"

Bang... crash... wallop

took me a good few months to get fully acquainted with my £700 325i, mind you I did buy it in the winter. I respected its rwdiness 100% with its 14" steelies & remoulds & 17yr old suspension etc.

Far more entertaining than an outright performance setup, then I started to realise that the old girl wasn't just a pretty face & so I threw on the billies, eibachs & 15's my mates type RA scooby fell victim to it. That was a monumental occasion.

I do a steady 30 in the 30's, 40 in the 40's, don't see so many 50's ...erm yes

That is carp though.

By the same logic...

If he was going a bit faster he would have cleared the clio too.

I always overtake drivers who show terrible control or weaving, they can go and crash behind me thank you very much, even on the motorway I will increase my speed to put a decent distance between myself and a muppet. (don't even bother suggesting I should slow down and let them get ahead)

the kind police man reminded me that you should give dangerous drivers more room, pull over if needsbe,

at the end of the day as i said, if people drive like d1cks let them smash, if an accident then hope they are ok,

and for this bloke i think , after spending a couple of quid on this car, and only he will know how fast he was or was not going, i think he will be hurting right now poss in more than one way
if there wern't people like me,
with cars like mine,
who would you put down to make yourself feel better?
