My 318iS open diff is leaking at the seal where the prop enters it. Is this repairable with a new seal or what are my options?

Thanks

me thinks me has the same problem tho mine is on a 320 diff, are the seals replaceable?? What work is required to fit them? i.e, does the whole diff have to be stripped????

I replied to this one not long ago. Use the search button to find it.
It's not a difficult job, but you must follow the instructions regarding removing and replacing the flange retaining nut exactly, or you will have a scrap diff.

That may be the trouble. If he doesn't know the procedure required, and just dives in, dismantles what's neccessary, and changes the seal, as I probably would if I didn't know the procedure, then he won't be able to torque it up properly.
It's the dismantling procedure that's important.

Well he had a look at it and reckons I dont HAVE to replace the seals. Its only weeping a very small amount of oil, its not loosing oil as such. As I plan to replace it with an LSD in a few months I dont think its worth the hassle fixing thsi one.

Thanks for the info Brianmoooore, I searched around and found out what you are talking about so I will put it to him should we decide to replace the seals.
I have a feeling he might know anyway, he's been building rally cars for 25 years and converted a Mk1 Fiesta to RWD with a 180hp Burton Power engine when he was in his early twenties! winkeye
