I think I'm getting this correct but want to check I am.

I need a wheel with an offset of around ET40
If I get a wheel with an offset of ET20 the wheel will stick in too far, so if I put a 20mm spacer on the ET20 wheel I'll bring the wheel 20mm closer to the wheelarch and make it the same as a ET40 wheel.

Is this right or am I missing something :?

Nope, other way round.

If you need an et40 wheel, you can only space it to 40 if it has a numerically higher offset. An et20 wheel, to use your example, can only be spaced to a figure less than 20. The et20 wheel will stick out too far.

Cheers Stuart.

So I'm getting it backwards and a ET20 will be no good at all as it can't be made to fit.
Jez this is confusing :?

That's nothing yet, you have to remeber what width the wheel is and ET too, if you're going
15 x 7 then ET should be about 24
15 x 8 then ET should be about 15
15 x 9 then ET should be about 8
so on and so on.

Have fun now

If we're going to those lengths Rav, the OP also needs to know that the common misconception that rim diameter has an effect on required offset is just that - a misconception.

Not really, rim diameter can be 15"-17", rolling distance will be a factor and also the tyre size, but the ET can be the same.
What people do is not match the correct size of tyre for the application and then get rubbing issues.
Hope that makes sense. :D

Got E36 M3 evo front set up going on and Z3 rear trail arms and have been told that ET40 is about right, But I like some of the E34 wheels but their offset is around ET20 :?

BBS RC's look good, off the 328i Sport.

You could always flare the arches to get lower offset wheels to fit :)

Watching some BBS RC041 wheels on ebay, do like the sunflower wheels as fitted to M3 evos .

I have the 328i sport RC041's on mine (with 7.5" front + 8" rears).
Im using 318ti trailing arms and the fit is superb even with the 235/45/17 rear tyres which came with the alloys...

I have M3 Evo front end too except I do not have the wishbones yet so cannot comment on the fit there...

Are your Z3 rear arms from the //M version as they are obviously wider ?

I will be replacing them with Yokohama Parada spec 2's in 215/40/17 as they are about half of the price of the 235's !

I've got the trail arms from a 1.9 Z3.

I was wondering on the ride height I get away with with the wheels I have, bought some M3 sunflowers and got 215/40x17" on a 8.5J rim on the rear.
