Need a family car , 5-series size , would like leather , air-con etc whats the best I can hope for ? model number and year appreciated maybe even a pointer to an advert. Can I get something decent or as usual am I lacking cash . Can go between 6 - 7 grand and must be diesel.

I don't know what the last generation Merc E Classes sell for (the one after the bug eyed W210 scrap) but they're a very pleasant car - I prefer them as an everyday chariot to the E60. Early 220CDi's might be down to 7k now and thunkfully they arrived just as Mercedes sorted the rust issues. I think they'll be 10 grand though.
Last of the old shape Mondeo TDCi takes some beating as well, very good cars. E39 diesels but only as a manual - no swirl flap or autobox problems. 7 grand should buy a stunning 525d on an 04 plate with nice miles. Avoid cheap high mileage early E60's, they're crap.
