What if the depth was a bit longer, so it stuck out a little from under the hood compartment, and then the amps can be mounted just above and a fake wall section created? Would that be good enough to have decent quality from two 12" subs?

But if you work out the box size, it would depend on you running either one sub or two.
No way are you ever going to get 2 x 12" subs in a box under the hood compartment.
My box was designed to hit a very wide Hz range too, most boxes are limited in what range they hit, that's why there are soo many different designs out there.
12" sub will not fit under the hood compart at the upright angle, facing towards either the cabin or rear light panel. You would probably just about get away with 10" or a couple of powerfull 8" would do the job.

I've got big plans for mine, just need the time and money

Need to know the exact model so I can find out the T/S (list of numbers which determines the box size), also the how much boot space you have to play with.
Just checked the sub, the model number is TS-W3001D4. I want a box to fit under the hood compartment. Anyone know the height etc?

Also, is it worth fitting ports from the boot through the metal panels behind the seats?

ive just built a box to sit under the hood bit, sits tight from shock to shock, has 1/4 inch gap between top of box and hood bit and from rear seat it sticks out about 1 1/2 inch past the hood bit and it sounds great :) with both 12's running and i now have lots of boot space winkeye winkeye

You have any pics Maddog? Are the subs standing straight, or have you had to slant them?

they are both facing upwards towards the hood bit, i had a slant box before but in order to get it under the hood, the box will end up half way between the hood bit and the rear lights takin up far too much space. no doubt that havin a box take up most of your boot space will be better sounding but mine sounds great tbh. i dont have a pic yet but ill post up the dimentions in a bit. i also can get to my spare wheel without touching the box winkeye

Sounds like I may be going down this route then. Didnt really think of having the subs facing up before.

Low frequencies travel in all directions, the higher up you go in the audible frequency range the more directional the waves become.

If you want 12", you could build something similar to below (MrLee30's build).

8" should fit Alex, i'd want at least 2 though :)

It can be done, think the max height box you can get under the hood compartment is 11" so either 10" or 8" if you have the facing straight and not up.

If you don't need any space for shopping etc, then you could use up the whole boot, something i'm going to do when I get some designs done 8)

the face of my box is going to be angled same as the cabin. so 12" will fit easy. the volume can be made up with width/depth.

if i get stuck, i'l make the box same shape, and face the sub up.

Yeah I know, that's why a couple of 8" would be a better fit and also sound better due to the box being the right size etc.

It's not always about the size of the speaker  :D

It's what you do with it and how you make the most of it winkeye

I've been thinking of going 15" for mine but think that would be a bit over kill

It is about size if you want to go deep <40Hz.

Here is a 10" that can drive down to 47 Hz not sure about an amp to drive it though.

thats to do with the calcs for building a correct enclosure.

Very much doubt it can push 35 Hz thats a lot of air to push, our hearing cannot hear below 20Hz, more like 25Hz for me

Its easy stuff really, basic physics. Movement of air = sound, so to 'push' the amount of air to create a low frequency resonance requires a fair bit of muscle. Muscle=cone size and magnet size. Little tricks are done in construction now to make it easier to move greater volumes of air but size is still king.

It will say in the subs manual on what the recommended box size should be. You'll want to get it as close to that as possible to get the best sound.

personally I would get an amp with at least twice that ones output at 4 Ohms for that speaker.
Speaker looks good on paper, but that amp will do it no favours.

Don't forget when you build your box that you may on occasion need to get to the spare wheel. As you see from my angled box it is best to make use of the space under the hood compartment, the box has 3cu ft and a 13x5 inch port firing to the side you can't see. The box despite being very big still allows me to get my wakeboard in the boot, or a set of golf clubs.
