hi, i've got a leak on my 325i box. it's leaking from the output shaft that joins on the prop. my questions are, is it possible to change the seal with the box in situ? and how do i do it?
any help would be great.

yes you can do it in place, remove the prop & rubber doughnut, drain the gear oil, slacken the gearbox output flange nut & remove flange. pop out the seal and fit the new one. rebuild and fill to the level plug with new oil.

Output shaft oil leaks, more often than not, turn out to be a leak from the selector shaft oil seal, which is immediately above the output shaft. Oil runs down onto the top of the output shaft, then runs around both sides of it, looking exactly as if the seal is leaking.
Note that if you do remove the output flange, the splines of the shaft need sealant to prevent oil running along them, inside the flange, and leaking from the nut.
