Didn't Steve mention, Rav? He's ripping the engine out and putting in an M52 3.0, bored and stroked to 3.3 to match the boot badge...

Currently slumming it in an E46 Touring

He's bought it to "Restore" not ruin it with a crap engine.

it's 0.5 grams lighter than a 3.5 so it might corner a bit better ?
trying to find info is fairly difficult Dez but I am sure someone on here will know,
it's basically an engine from a 733i 3.3 litre 3210cc (197 BHP) 285NM torque,

The 333i engine is a stock 732i lump afaik, 200 bhp. The Alpina manifold was fitted because they were just there, ready made. The 732i was a slow seller and the engine was unique to that car, so there would have been a few about. Performance is akin to a really good Tech 1 Sport - the 3.2 was always a slightly 'flat' engine - not as good as the 3.5, obviously. But it is what it is, good to see it being saved.

157kW of BMW M power with more than 300nM of torque. Needless to say, it goes. And, thanks to Alpina upgraded brakes, it also stops. Extremely well.

power is put down through a dogleg getrag and through a 2.91 slipper , I don't expect it to be a screamer but I am sure it will be a good fun driving car

You'll be changing that 2.91 for 3.46, 2.91 is tooo lazy

15 knots of BMW M30 power with more than 300nM of torque at the propeller. Needless to say, it goes. And, thanks to Alpina upgraded rudder, it also corners. Extremely well.

3.46 is a little too low. A 3.25 will be about right - that's what my 'doglegged' E28 528i had and it was about right. Lighter car with more power = perfect.

Yeah, that gearing is a tad long even with a 1:1 fifth gear. A 3.25 diff would be a bit better I rekon.
Really looking forward to seeing how this project goes, and chuffed to see it go to someone who isn't going to rip it apart.

Cheers Theo,
will see how it goes, I do have a 3.25 tucked away
the ratio's from the 333i handbook are
1st-3.717
2nd-2.403
3rd-1.766
4th-1.263
5th-1.000
the ZF is 25% lock with a 2.93:1 ratio
I use my cars for long distance quite a lot so it may work out ok !

Yeah, stick with the 2.93 if you're going to do a fair few decent length journeys.
Please get a thread up in the photo gallery ASAP!

FWIW 2.93 with direct 5th is virtually identical to 3.64 with overdrive (0.81) 5th.
