OK this has happened over the space of about the last 30 mins, but I seem to have bought whatever I need from a crashed 850i with 155k on the clock.

This is merely going to be stashed for the time being as I want to build a drag car and was going to go the hot rod route, but want to do it with an E30, so the lure of a V12 and a mighty shot of gas seems like a crazy but good adventure.

The guy I know who has just bought the salvage only wants the rear axle and few bits for his rat rod project, the rest is mine. So I need an idea of what to keep.

I think I will keep the Auto box as that's better for drag racing anyway, so killer amount of expense saved there.

Wiring, wiring and more wiring. Also, make doubly sure that all engine bits are there as iirc they have two of almost everything, AFM's for instance. A quick bit of research should help you tell if anything expensive has been pilfered from the engine bay.

Also, have a quick scout about on some of the 8 forums/ebay etc as alot of things (frag that you could...well...frag) were probably 8 specific and may be worth more than you think.

I'm going to have a chat with the bloke tomorrow about the finer details, but I'll basically be able to rape what I want off it save for back axle and front discs & calipers.

The guy who I'm sorting this out with races and builds stock cars and he can make space frames up too, reckoned on £250 for the steel to make a frame and said it would take him a week. May not go that drastic though but as the transmission tunnel would need the good news for the gearbox, it would be rude not to have it sat a bit further back

How strong are those gearboxes? Awesome sounding project, but I can't help thinking that the 'sensible' option would have 4 less cylinders!

I have no idea how strong the auto boxes are.

I'd assume that with the weight of a stripped E30 being probably40%+ lighter than the barges they are used to shunting about, it should be OK with an extra cooler fitted. The launches may be an issue though with some slicks on the back. Time will tell.

The car is getting collected this weekend, so I'll know more then.

Glenn, you'll regret that kind offer :)

I do agree, a V8 or turboing an M20 would probably be less hassle, but I figured that as the car will be as borderline road legal as I can get, some of the associated hassles may not be as troublesome. I'm a cheap coont and a V12 with as much as I can grab hold of for about £100 is where my short sights are at the mo :)

The 850i is getting collected tomorrow.

I may go and take a look at it next weekend. £80 for the engine, box, ecus, looms etc etc. Good times.

Well the scrap car got collected on Sunday. Apparently it has no roof, cut off by emergency services, but it runs apparently. It's been tucked away on a farm for the winter, which suits me fine as I have nowhere to put the lump at the moment.

I'm going to have a look at Glenn's V12 swap thread as a good guide. The donk in that swap came from an E32 IIRC. Just want to start doing homework really.

Are there likely to be many differences with an 850i as the donor? Have we still got fly by wire throttle madness to contend with? What about the sump? Are they the same as the E32?

Is the V12 auto box huge and defo likely to require the transmission tunnel making bigger?

Chev V8 FTW if you want to go racing surely... Infinite amount of go fast bits and cheap as cheap too.

I am so jealous of you people doing engine swaps, over here they dont let you change anything without an engineer and there is so many rules. We can only increase capacity by 30% otherwise never be legal and no registration.

But I will be watching and dreaming :thumb:

Mike, I had absolutely no intentions of going near a V12, but at £80 for the lot, it would be rude not to have a dabble.

I reckon a big unstressed lump like the M70 will take a nice 150 shot of gas and make a stripped out turd with some slicks or drag radials on the back dial in some good times. With the auto box it should be consistent too, which will be important with dial in times in bracket racing.

No car yet, I'll start looking in the new year, I'll need to get my arse in gear and get the soarer moved on as it's just taking up space and the cash will come in handy.

I'll be looking for a proper ropey old piece of shyte though. Maybe a moredoor just for the pish take

If the wiring can be tackled without too many dramas I'm not afraid of the mechanicals. Because it will be going in a car destined just for 1/4 mile action (although I will be aiming for road legal) I can ditch any bufty action/ OEM hommage.

I'm just too much of a cheap cooont, I know the lad selling this gear and the engine, box and rear clip make a lot more sense for my intentions, but I will get murdered if I spent out on that.

I had no intentions of going near a V12, but £80 sucked me in :)
