The recline mechanism on the passengers seat in my 1990 convertible is broken (backrest not straight, won't recline). I figure that the easiest way to repair this would be to buy a new seat and swap the leather over.
The seats are the sport type with adjustable knee supports.
The questions -
will the front seat from a 3 door bolt in?
Is changing the leather trim over a difficult job?
Thanks for your help. Gives me a job to do now the sun is disappearing

That sounds quite repairable to me. They all go loose and floppy. Take the seat out of the car and take the seat back off (pull out headrest first). The backrest problem just sounds like the cables on the tilt forward mechanism need tightening up and/or maybe the 2 self tapping screws that hold the back panel on maybe missing. This panel is not just cosmetic but an integral part of the seats rigidity.
That might also cure the reclining problem too once it is all square. If not, undo side pivot screws and separate back from bottom. You should be able to see what's not working, but again it is usually just a question of tightening everything up and putting it all back together again. It's not as frightening as it may first appear, just don't lose any of the bits!!

Common for the bracket to break where its welded to the main hinge tube. Usual cause is one of the seat back securing screws coming loose, and the bracket getting twisted.
It's a MOT failure, so has to be fixed.
Usually repairable with a bit of welding, but involves a fair bit of rather fiddly stripping down and reassembly.

Great help guys, thanks very much.
I will get the seat out the car and see if it can be repaired.
Having seen the pictures of Johnono's seats I would prefer not to take the covers off - Good luck with your refurb!
