I want to get a cheap diesel in the new year. Anybody had any experience with them? I can sense the feedback isn't gonna be good for some reason lol

I think I heard they were a road block and a 318i is much better. Someone will come along and confirm this. :D

I'm interested in them as well.

Dog slow with all the associated drama that goes with old diesel engines. I wouldn't touch them with a sh!tty stick.

A M43 engined 318i saloon is a far better bet. Cheap to buy, superior perfomance, decent torque, bulletproof engine, abundance of spares available and 40mpg on a run.

If you want a compact get a 316i or 318ti.

They're crap. Slow, not that good on fuel and they're prone to engine issues. A 316i Pact is much better.

If you want a reliable tough diesel to give good mpg, you've got either the 306 1.9D (n/a) or the Golf 1.9D Mark 3. The 306 is the better of the two to drive (by a long way) and doesn't suffer the Golf's rust problems. Also consider the Citroen ZX 1.9D, another PSA XUD powered shitter. The 1.7D Astra Mark 111 isn't bad either and the turbo ones are quite reliable and robust.

I think you meant 'BMW'.

A 'beamer' is a grinning retard on the special bus. Pugs are okay as long as they're basic without too many electrics. Remember the old phrase regarding beggars and choosers.....

'lol'.

Didnt know they did a 318td i thought they only made 2.5td's in the 36's.
Still you dont want a peugot there french and just feel nasty would go for the golf.
If you had to get a cheapy vauxhall go for the isuzu engined astra over the low blow vauxhall engine there crap.

I think they did a 90 and a 110hp in the golf plus they can be tuned as for the isuzu engines they can get good power aswell, i ran 26psi through one :)

The 318tds is rated at 90 bhp but that 90 bhp is at a certain (high) point in the rev range. The power band is ludicrously small and they never seem to be on the boil. Horrid to drive and I'm surprised BMW let it out of the bag like that. a 90 bhp Golf TDi would slaugher it. But to be fair, the Golf is 1.9 litre and the BMW is around 1.7.

I know these are all great engined especially them Astras with the Isuzu engine not like them crap Ecotec engines but I just find lack they charisma they're too boring lol. But I think I'm going to get a 306 D Turbo they look ok if you get a nice colour and some Cyclone wheels and also very easily tuned if need be (I know a 306 isn't saying much about charisma before you tell me lol). I was looking at the 306 HDi but they are expensive to tune because it's got an ECU so you're only left with a remap and they also don't have an intercooler even though they will be more economical.

Sorry, but with a budget of £800 , simple and cheap to fix should be top of your wish list. Charisma should be about 163 rd on said list !

PS If you want charisma, I have a very nice 2001 Alfa 156 in black with red leather, yours for £800. It has shed loads of "charisma" but whether it will still start in a week, who knows ! :)

The 306 D Turbo is easy to fix and cheap that's why I wouldn't get the HDi. I know what you're saying but all I'm saying is a 306 looks a whole lot better than any of the above mentioned cars (in my opinion)

And on you're offer for the Alfa I'll think I'll leave that for when I'm rich lol

Unless you have a handy supply of "coloured" diesel, choosing a 306 over a 316 compact is not a very good idea ! :o

i doubt a diesel compact uses any less fuel than a 316i, and the petrol engine one is probably smoother and quieter. no point buying a diesel just because it's a diesel unless there's a benefit from it (or a free supply of red / chip fat)
cheers,

Modern diesels are great to drive. took a 330d out and wow was i impressed, torque everywhere. However old diesels are just unrefined and a bit rubbish!

Could try test driving a couple of each though?

Cost per mile and cost / frequency of repair are all that matters at this end (the bottom) of the market .

Whereas a 330i does 6-7 mpg less, and as long as it has a rad, breather pipes and water pump every 100'000, it'll plod on for 2-300'000 miles without issue.
