hello,
I am putting an m30 3,5 from a 735i 89 into a 320i e 30 touring 91.
I have a problem of connection : engine don't start...

I connected the round plug to the car and tried , I have 12v to the coil and no ignition, no fuel pump, no injection.
can somebody help me for electrical connection to modify to the car ?
i also have three connectors near the motronic box that are not connected ( that's what the seller of the engine said) is that normal?

sorry for my english my main language is french and english lessons are so far...
thanks for help

is the engine plug round on your engine?

my engine and car plugged straight in. 1989 316i, 1989 535iA.

1989 316i
coil pin 7
fuel pump pin 13
starter pin 18

it should run with these three connected.

however... what wire colours does the plug with three connectors near the motronic box have? on the early (m535i) type engine, there's a 3-wire plug near the motronic box, and one of those wires needs a 12v feed to run the engine, it's part of the trip computer immobiliser. E34 engines don't have this but your E32 one might?

ok I have a round plug to the car
the e32 had the bord computer .
there is three plug near the ecu :

one plug with two brown wire

one plug with red wire, black/green wire, black/grey wire, black/blue wire

one plug with brown wire , brown/green wire, green/white wire

I think that these plugs are for the bord computer and maybe for an immobilizer.

starter and fuel pump are good because i put 12v on the 13pin and pump ran.

ok.

have you fed the coil correctly?

on my car (and i guess most older bmws), as long as the fuel pump isn't immobilised you can run the engine from under the bonnet without touching the ignition.

put a 12v feed to the large (10mm nut) coil connector. this should make the dash warning lights come on if they are connected, and should get the ignition on. then crank it with the key (or you can do it by giving the starter solenoid 12v)
the coil just needs that single 12v feed to the big nut, no earthing

i THINK if you do this you don't even need the engine plug connected at all (but need 12v to fuel pump). if it doesn't work there's an loom/motronic/immobiliser/other problem

my 535i auto loom has all those silly little plugs near the motronic unit, none are connected...

keep posting!

I dont mean to hijack the thread, but I have a question re M30 conversion.

How much m30 3.5 L engine weights comparing to m20 2.5 L ?

I'm concerned that swapping already too heavy engine with even hevier might seriously upset car weight balance therefore handling

Will teh stock gertag 260 gearbox bolt i nstraight to m30 ? or do i need mods/custom adapters/completly gifferent gearbox ?

On the ECU side, does it have to be completly replaced with m30 stuff, or m20 wiring loom/ecu/sensors work ok ?

ok thanks toby for your help...

I did what you said but engine won't start so i connected the round plug and checked all connections to be sure that they are ok and maybe one was bad and was good after this check because engine started after that .
sorry for the ridiculus problem.

It is so good to hear the engine sound...

to mops
I putted the e30.de engine mounts in position 3 and it seems to have a good weight balance anyway.
off course it is heavier but much more power and torque, and for me it is the most important thing, because i do this for a drift use(in belgium such modifications are forbidden only racing use...)

I used all mechanical and electronical parts of the m30 because everything is different between m20 and m30
