Cast metals are just as good as forged and forged and worked metals.Rav335uk wrote:No good then for a project, too soft.
If the materials are the same, the properties will be exactly the same, apart from in forging the "hardness factor" is increased.
Forged matels are "harder" than ones cast becuase when they forge them, especually cold forging, the crystalline structures in the metals deform slightly and pack really closely together and form a unfirm grain structure which is really strong. theyre still as ductile, but are more resistant to physical change and properties such as heat transfer across the boundaries are improved and this makes them much more suitable for rugged use.
Having said that, a good product made form a good quality foundry with good quality sand or clay casts wth good performations and cooling systems to give an equal solidification medium should be more than suitable for the job!
Many aircraft landing gear components are made form casting and they have to withstand "THOUSANDS" of lbs of compressive and shear force and they don't fail!
However, if you want the best option, go for machining!
I know this stuff becuase I'm doing Aerospace engineering and university and just recently learned this stuff! My lecturer used to work for the MAHLE group who make automotive parts and include cosworth too, and he worked on the engine block of the R8!!!
