I don't want to put anyone off e39's Dan. just go in eyes wide open. They are a nice car, just don't think they'll run and run like an e34 that just needs the occasional set of pads and a couple of tyres.DanThe wrote:And to think I was considering an E39 touring

I was chewing it over for about 3 or 4 months, decided against it due to electrics more than anything, the E34 has a few electrical problems but at least they are physical problems that can be fixed with solder and side cutters most of the time. Numerous temperamental ECU's are not my idea of motoring, will probably just buy another E34 touring and bung it a later engine and more modern LPG setup when I get round to it
Pah, you think E39's are bad, try E60's!
E39s are Ok if you get a good (looked after) one and the trick is knowing when to let go.
I had a prefacelift 528 which needed so many "little" things doing to it, like the odd electrical gremlin (locking, airbag), bushes, clutch, CCV, and when added up, it just wasn't worth it.
Bought a facelift touring a few months ago with less miles on it and a FSH, and a apart from an oil leak which developed after a long trip its like a new car and TBH if I have to fork out to pay an indy to sort the leak it will still have been a worthwhile purchase.
But again, it's not a "keeper" like the E30.
Good thread this one

I was really careful when i bought mine. Full BMW history, 1 owner from new and more reciepts fell out the glovebox than I've ever seen. I've not scrimped on it either. Always genuine OEM parts and diagnostics by BMW. It appears that 90% of them have issues i'm afraid.clipper wrote:E39s are Ok if you get a good (looked after) one and the trick is knowing when to let go.

A petrol E39 is enough aggro but a diesel one is a whole heap more, all for potentially an extra 5/6 mpg. Never mind the 25% extra you will have to pay to buy a diesel

The reason I never went there. When they were new, stunning cars. but put a few miles and years on a derv 39 and they become a bit of a ticking timebomb.pacerpete wrote:/// KAMI wrote:Nice car...i would of went for the 530d.....but looks

Plus there's nothing like a straight six petrol on full chat.

interesting reading
can i get some input then on valuation on the following.
51 reg 530i sport, manual, 130k, FULL Dealer service history with some specialist independent garage doing a few jobs, its cosmos black, grey leather, alloy interior trim, glass sunroof PDC sensors (front and rear) auto climate control. NO tv/satnav ( but thats not important to me and a £100 tomtom does a better job) and no Xenons ( again an after market kit is about £100). ots on the 17" sport wheels like trevs car.
it was dealer car for 6 months then 1 owner since then. its not wanted for nothing and i know the family selling, so not a multi owner
values for these are up and down like an essex girls knickers. it would be for me as daily.
cars at this age and similar mileage seem to be between £5,500 and as low as £2500, but the lower end seem tatty.
i was thinking of offering him £3000, but being a family friends i dont want to offend them

As said earlier Kos, 3K is a very fair bid, if they refuse, they will come back to you after several weeks of council types bidding them 2k or a P plate mondeo and a well thumbed Argos catalogue !

I've got a 530d Touring (52 plate) for the wife and kids (325i touring for moi!). Overall it's a brilliant car but she's had some issues (but at least she's returning 43.5mpg which isn't bad for a big old lump) to be honest. She goes in on Monday to have the heater motor replaced (dash out job). Final stage resistor didn't fix the issue of no fans unfortunately.
Just a question though - she smokes when you put your foot down - could this be the egr valve perhaps? No leaks, pipes all look in good nick as far as I can see.

If it is returning 43.5 MPG, ignore the smoke, "fixing" it will definately not improve the fuel consumption !

Well we are nearly up to 2 years with this car (come April) so time for another little (
) update.
On the last page you'll have seen the last issue I had with a susprected Left Rear Speed sensor issue. Well I fitted a genuine new one and the same night the issue was back. 2 orange brake warnings lit, the DSC emblem lit and the Speedo not working. Re read the codes, "left rear speed sensor" again. So I swapped the two rears over.
IF the sensor is duff it would then throw the cruise control out and the above fault should rectify. Did it f*ck!!
Which means only one thing. And if you go on the 5 forum, you'll find at least 3 threads with the same issue, all early 2000 cars. ALL WITH FAULTY ABS ECU MODULES!!!!!!
So I whip it out and send it to BBA Reman. They test and repair these for just under 200 quid. Well when a new ones £880 plus coding and fitting, it's actually a good deal. They ring me up, "No fault found mr. White!". I question it but they are adament. So they send it back and guess what? The fault is worse than before. They charge me £68 for the privilage!
So I speak to Barry (BSS325i) and he books it in at work (Vines BMW) for a full diagnostics. He promises to leave no stone unturned and as promised rings me at 3 in the afternoon to tell me??
"The ABS modules f*cked mate. Resistances are nowhere near where they need to be" and he returns the car to my drive with the full print out of the check routine BMW uses to determine whats wrong.
That little trip to Vines cost me a further £260. BUT heres where i need to say something to the zone!
HERES HOW HELPFUL, USEFUL AND KNOWLEDGABLE BARRY IS! ONCE AGAIN, HE HAS COME TO MY RESCUE. WE HAVE LOST A TOP GUY FROM THE ZONE IN MY MIND!
Cheers barry if your reading this. Really apreciate all the help and assistance on this one.
Rant over.
So I immediately ring BBA back and tell them BMW's findings and get some c0ck, tell me that the only way BMW would know it was definately faulty is to fit a new module!
To which I kindly inform him that no BMW dealer would stock a £900 part, fit it, code it to a customers car (and so render it 2nd hand) JUST to prove a fault! he went a bit quiet.
I box up said module along with a stinking letter of complaint and Barry's test results. They ring me up and the nice guy on the phone proceeds to inform me (with no promting from me) that:
They've "found a disconnected earth wire and a disconnected sensor wire sir".
Well why the f*ck didn't find that the first time I questioned and so proceeded to tell him the car had been off the road for a total of a month and it's seen a 260 quid trip to BMW's to prove why I sent it to them a month earlier! All I could win was the dropping of the 2nd P&P!! They return the module and guess what, It's been fine for the last week. Touch wood, the fault is cleared. All i need to do now is to grab Barrys bit of kit and clear the fault codes.
Oh and write to BBA to claim back my £260 BMW fee due to their incapability to find two diss wires the first time. Obviously visual physical faults that THEY missed the first time it was on their bench.
Off today to order two rear tyres (255/40 17 SportContact 3's) which will be the next bill
However, when I drove it for the first time after the fault had finally been fixed, I fell in love again. These 3.0L's are blinding cars.
I'm not sure of it's fate yet. Things are all changing at work so I may lose the company aRstra which means I will need to put the wife in a more sensible car. I may out the e39, use the funds towards putting her in a late Golf which she loves, and get myself either a late 36 328 touring or an early 46 328 saloon. They are so cheap now that it would be a good bet for me to "tool" about for a while.

Hes at Gatwick. He books the car in for me and I pay the going rate. The reciept is all a plus for the history but I know the works done to maximum standard as he's on it. He used to be able to do the same when he was at Chandlers. It's certainly peice of mind for me.oakey wrote:glad you got to the bottom of the problem and got it sorted! well done bazza! would you really be content with a e36 as a replacement? Whether he's gone for good or not? I sincerly hope not but I wouldn't blme him if it was.
E36? Not sure to be honest. I had a very nice low mile 323 convertible before this e39. However, it was a fully historied late car (99 V) and was proper to the core. I couldn't drive a dog. Thats why i'm thinking 328i (or even 323i) e46, just to keep it a touch more modern if it's my daily?

e46 is just a fat e36 with more to go wrong and everythings coded again. You want my touring! low miles, tidy, history.............
A proper e36 can be maintained at home for most jobs. They're very tough and a good one gives little away to the newer stuff. If anything you realise how good the ride comfort is compared to an E90, 1 series, Sport suspension e46's
