I'm having a debate with a guy at work over whose car would win in a straight line drag race, his 1.8ltr mk1 Ford Mondeo (its blue with a lipstick pink bumper!) or my 1990 BMW 316i.
What do you guys think?! winkeye

I rekon you would have your arse handed to you by the mondeo...

Ive had my 316i up against a 2.0ltr mondeo, and the difference was incredible, obviously the big mondy handles like a tank on pingpong balls, but in a straight line i was never catching him.

If theirs one thing id fault about my e30, (316i) it would be thats its slow as a week in the clink :(

Oops you missed the i out. 316i = 1600cc injection, 316 1800cc non injection

Agreed I only sold my mint 316 because I wanted more power. Had a TVR S1 for a while before I saw sence and got a 325i tourer

If the cam is good on the 316i (i.e. it revs freely to the redline) then I'd put my money on it due to the Mondeo's weight.

It'll be very close though.

and now, ladies and gentlemen, for the next exciting race!

who will win this electrifying duel between 70-year-old Mr. Smith from the corner shop, and 2-year-old Bobby on his tricycle?

Whilst Mr. Smith clearly has the experience, there's no denying that young Bobby has the brighter colours on his chosen form of transport - that dayglow yellow surely takes the show 'n' shine crown over Mr. Smith's grey steel zimmerframe...
'08 GSX-R750, '02 CBR600F, and a beast of a Focus 1.8LX...

Has the zimmer got a wide arch conversion? Cause my moneys on that! :D
318iS became MR2 Turbo became FTO GPX Mivec became Impreza became Rover 620Ti became Honda S2000 (current) became Fiesta 1.25 and 200SX Drift Slag (when the Honda has gone)

yes indeedy russ, the front leg-to-back leg distance now measures a whopping 345mm, up from the standard 235mm! Mr. Smith's certainly got a few tricks up his sleeve...

Has it got a ///M badge?

Seriously though, in the exciting duel between the 316i and the Mundano, my moneys on the Mondeo. The 316i due to its racing style rear wheel drive set up will allow for greater traction off the line, however, it will be let down by its wardrobe like aerodynamics as the pace builds. This is where the aerospace engineering of the Mondeos extra slippery design will win the day.

thoses saxos are fast for there size . they beat 1.8s and i had to try hard with a 2.2 audi quattro to shake it off. dont under estimate them .LOL

Were you sure it was a 1.1i? 8O

Generally with a 316i 1.1i Saxos/106s are easy and 1.4i versions are about equal.

it was a friend yeh . it was low miles though only about 16 thou or so old and all our cars had 100 or more thou but still it was a tuff little bugger to beat
we had volvo 1.8 li . sierra 1.8 . nissan blueblid 1.8i (always last poor thing)
the volvo was the fastest belive it or not still had 40 thou more miles than the ford
but the audi was 4wd off the line it was - bang! - gone! but still slow in the long run and the saxo was even match to the audi witch shocked me !

i guess id need to see a saxo against the 316i to belive it and the same with the ford monday morning but id say the the mondao 1st and bmw saxo a close call.

Well i was happily driving home from work last night on a duel carraige way and mr mondeo appears in my rear view mirror....and gets closer and closer and closer, to the point were i couldnt see his headlamps, and were doing 70mph!!!
If id had to brake that wouldve been it! Im all for larking about but thats just silly.
Needless to say i was not fluffy! :x
