will any other model diff fit an e30?

i've heard you can just change a backplate on some??

Old 5 series E28, just needs the back plate changing. The E28 1.8 manual has a 4.1 medium (large) case diff, I got Gareth to build up a large case 4.1 LSD using one and a different ratio LSD donor for the racer. I believe some of the early E36 compacts used the same small case diff as E30 but not checked this out first hand.

All E36 316i/318Ti Compacts use the small 168 E30 diff caisng, but E36 internals. That means the E30 output shafts won't click into place as the circlips are in the wrong place.
E28 diffs (except 535i ones) need the back plate and the output shafts changing for 325i ones.

and most e34 diffs, like 524td even has same ratio as an e30 m3 3.25 ,e28 524td has 3.15 ratio
