Been looking for about a month now for the right car and it turned up in brum this week. It was delivered last night. It was exactly what i was looking for - completely standard, plenty of paper work and plenty of work needed. Most people will think its a rotten turd but I'm going to save this one from the scrapyard!

Looks nice and original alright, but does need a fair few pound notes throwing at it.
Good luck with it though, a well worthy car for saving.
BTW if you ever replace that gearknob, give me a shout, i'll take it off your hands.

Good on you - for me this is what the zone is all about, enthuisiasts saving cars (did a sharp intake of breath when I saw the bonnet - thats some heavy stone chipping.)
If you got it at the right price and are prepared to spend what it needs, you will have a keeper.

cheers guys, glad you like it. Its a "smaller" side project to my turbo build. This wont take me long. There was a slight knock coming from the front. Have you ever seen this -

Nope - should that be there?

That's good news - I'd have expected them all to be hanging! So is it just the rear arches that are bad? Can't believe anyone would let that bonnet get so bad! Been stood for a while?

Yes the rear arch on both side and also the front jacking points both side. Been stood for 3 years before i seen it.
Im not sure why the bonnet is that bad as it has been looked after in the past. I have receipts for EVERYTHING!

Good luck with it! The ride height looks a little high for a Sport, or were the pics taken just after being taken off the jack?

Cheers, The car was on the jack when pics were taken.
That bonet may be a partern part that had no cavity wax and rotted from the inside out.
Good on you for saving this one!
It is looking rather sorry for itself at the moment. Hopefully the front and rear bumpers aren't too grotty on the inside as they do like to rust and there not cheap new and rather hard to come by second hand.
Is it dolphin grey or black? Hard to tell from the pics. If you need any pics or anything of my car for reference let me know.

Fairplay i thought my new one was a project and half but you have beat me with this one
On a serious note thow its nice and original and the interior looks good at least. How long has it been stood for? and did it set you back much?
Check in the boot behind the carpets/trim at the sides if you havent already as i bet thats shot also as in your pic of the arch the double skins of the inner arch are shot. Have you checked the roof properly by peeling the roof liner back a bit by the quarter windows and having a peak?

Nice one, just the sort of project Practical Classics feature in their restos.
I think it looks beautiful in a funny sort of way, and when it's finished you'll have the original photos to contrast.
Good luck!

save the shitters, my cabby was probably as rotten
thats got to be an aftermarket bonnet though, surely
to be fair if the inner arch is a little bit rotten and the outer a little crusty it would be as much work as that
be aware there is probably no sill behind the tech 1 skirts

My advice would be to remove the complete interior including dash board and all boot trim, remove all the body kit and remove the head lining to inspect the car properly for rot as there will be more!
Good luck with it all and well done for taking on something like this.

Cheers for all the input guys. I will be doing some more work on it tomorrow so ill check the sills. Under dash is good but the carpet is coming out to repair the front jacking points. The car is better than it looks i think.
Been shopping tonight down in London and came away with a mint bonnet, new 51mm strut, retro car phone and a very nice Porsche radio. All for 40 quid! Ill get some pics up of the work tomorrow.

Got a few bits done today. Starting with fitting the new strut and then cutting away all the rusty metal around the jacking points, I cut this right back to a surface i could weld to.
Then i made the template, cut the steel, welded it it in, sealed and sprayed.
Done this both sides and a small section above the jacking point making the front of the car now solid and mainly water tight.
After this i fitted the new bonnet that instantly transformed the rusty look of the car.
I only realised it hasnt got power steering today
