Is it possible to buy ATE power discs for the E30? I need some new pads too, so wondered what people rate. Are OEM BMW pads any good?

I used ATE Power discs on my Astra GTE and they were the best discs I ever used. No problems with warping and a nice minimalist groove on them.

What about discs though? I tend to just use pretty normal pads, I've never noticed anything so great about supposedly uprated pads.

Uprated pads don't give "better" brakes. They don't neccessarily make you stop any quicker, or reduce pedal presure. What they do do is allow the brakes to operate at a higher temperature, to allow you to use them harder without experiencing fade.
There's probably no such thing as a definitive OEM pad anyway, as BMW tend to buy parts in from a number of suppliers.

Yes I am aware of that. Hence why std pads seem to suit me on A and B road driving. I have only suffered brake fade once on normal roads and that was not a pleasant experience. But that's more to do with the callipers on that car not being large enough for the use they were getting.

So I'm going to stick with my normal method of just fitting cheap and cheerful pads.

With the Vauxhall parts it was possible to buy "Police Spec" pads, and these were Mintex 5530 (or some other random number) pads.

I use ATE power discs and Pagid fast road pads on my 2.7, along with dot 5.1 fluid and goodridge hoses.

They proved to be plenty good enough for my trip to the Nurburgring this summer, didn't have any brake fade.

It's a good setup :D

Cheers,

Where did you buy the ATE discs? I'm really pleased that they are available for the E30 because I was very, very impressed with them on my Vauxhall. Cheap too.

mintex/ferrodo pads.

I put brand new from the dealer disks and pads front and rear on boxing day 2003 on that puppie they cannot be done already?! stopped really well on all that

Um , mine squek sometimes, and sometimes they dont :?

I mean when they do its not defeningly loud, bit it probably depends on how you bed them in and that.

I am running power discs with greenstuff pads and Dot 5.1 and they are ok when cold, but as always better will a little heat. No fade with 3x 100-0 stops in quick sucession and then a 140-0 :) well impressed.

Tried C-tech pads before and they were the biggest load of sh*t going.

Also tried black dimond discs (drilled and groved) and these were about as effective as the Power discs but cost Ԛ£130! and cracked after 6 months!

I was speaking to www.tuning.co.uk and they explained that some brands of drilled and grooved discs are more for looks than performance. The ATE power discs are brilliant value.
Good stuff, thanks for the info.

Tom, I'm doing the same (have you done yours yet? How did it go?).
Reading around it sounds like a good idea to replace the brake wear sensors at the same time, if you want that pesky warning light to go out! Apparently there's one on the front N/S, and the rear O/S. Couple of quid from Eurocarparts.

Not done it yet! It's an easy job I'll do soon.
I did replace one sensor (rear one) and that didn't fix my warning light problem. After being lazy and suspecting the slightly damage plug, I finally did the proper thing and inspected the front one and found that the pad had worn down since I'd last inspected it. LOL.

Anyway I bought one pad sensor from BMW for Ԛ£7, then found that they are Ԛ£3.50 at Euro.
