Why do coffin dodgers get all the best e30's?

while walking the little 'un around the lake district, i see loads of e30's

particularly nice H reg metallic green one here, but i havent yet introduced anyone to the zone because the drivers are all err.... well.. old! And they probably so mint because they only get taken on sunday drives to the lakes.

I assume no other zoners live in the lake district?

The guy next door had a 1989 318i, sold it and bought a 1992 325i, when he was 70. He is 73 now Last year it didn't even do 450 miles!!!

This is strangely true, ive seen a lot of old boys in mint looking E30s! Had one side by side with me in the old M50 car, his was a maroon ish tourer, he sorta waved weakly

I suppose to all you teeny bopper e30 owners I could be approaching or even at the age that qualifies me as a Dodger.

I strongly object to the idea that I should not own TWO e30s because of my age. I can make a very good argument for anyone under 25 not to own one. (Always ripping the arse out of the cars, writing them off trying to do things they weren't meant to, adding all sorts of crap to them for no apparent gain in performance or handling etc. etc. etc.)

I drive TWO e30s because I love the car for mostly the same reasons as everyone else. I bought them, I taxed them, I insured them, I pay for the repairs and running costs so I, (that's me, not you) will f**king well drive them if I want to - SO wave at me if you must, but if you still have spots on your face and a few wispy hairs round your privates all you young b*stards will get from me is a few

As for this notion of older people looking after cars, its very true... if you browse about for the older E21 three series you will notice that the few that still exist are in absolutly mint original condition and usually have strangely low milage... thats because the only ones left are the ones that have been carefully looked after and rarely driven by the older generation.. I say good on to them... keep looking after those classic

I reckon that to the more mature driver, their E30 is just a car that they bought when it was new and a common sight so acknowledging others just doesn't cross thier mind.

Its good that oldies still drive them, keeps the Clutch industry in business.....gets replaced everytime they fill-up with petrol.

I personally would rather not buy one off an oldie, low miles pehaps but the engine wear of a 200,000 mile car......pulling off in 3rd, and never actually changing out of 3rd even on motorway.....6000 revs just to pull of the lights downhill........piss on the leather seats.....shall i continue.....

Though being well under 25 and having only had a full licence for 10 and a half months I do have to agree with 316eyes' post, a lot of young drivers simply don't look after their cars.

I suppose I'm a bit of an old man myself with cars

Anyway my point is, with the way they look after their cars there's nothing wrong with older E30 drivers, and I think they have every reason not to wave.

316eyes, I'd be interested to hear your full argument for anyone under 25 not owning an E30, hopefully I wouldn't be guilty of many, if any, of your reasons....

I was only five when my car was registered, and I was minus eight when the GT6 was made!

Guess some people just see these cars as cheap and fast, others like me, just like older cars and the maintenance thereof

I actually recon there are a few e30s still with their first owners. Recon loads of 320s 318s etc were bought as second cars and the owners have still got them. I also think its a bit of a generational thing. People of "older" generations perhaps buy items/goods/e30s to last, not just to have the latest, which far to many young people do.

My dad buy a new car a drives it till it dies. Had a 1993 golf gti and put 285 000 on it then bought another 10 years later to do the same.

I've noticed this too - I know of several E30s with old grannies driving them. There's a totally mint, unadulterated red 320i Touring toddles around near work. There's a very nice black 316i I've seen around the back streets near the house too, again with old granny at the wheel.

Someone brought up the "burnt out clutch and pissed on seats" thing. My folk's Rover they had was very very low milage for the year, was a Motability car. The clutch was shagged and it smelt like an old people's home, a mix of dried urine and TCP. A good valeting and a new clutch and that wee car was as good as new, once the K-Series had been given the nessecary decoking (red line in every gear for a few days soon sorted that out). They had that car for ages until the rust ate it away - a problem that often happens when you live as close to the Irish sea as they do.

Been offline for ages due severe PC probs so never got the chance to read the rest of this thread until now.

After my tongue in cheek rant at under 25's etc. a few extra comments spring to mind.

1. I honestly think it's brilliant that younger guys (and some gals) spend all their money on E30s and can appreciate the inbuilt qualities of the car.

2. At my age I have learned NOT to stereotype people by gender, looks, age etc. Had too many embarrassing experiences by doing this.
eg. My son played at quite a high standard in junior football and I once played in a charity match to raise funds for his club. This was played at Deepdale (Preston North End for all you southern softies) and on the celebrity side was a chap called Ray Pointer who in his youth played centre forward for Burnley and England. He was about 53 by then and a few of us decided he wasn't much to worry about. WRONG!!! He trotted about the middle of the pitch and every time we TRIED to tackle him WE ended up on our ARS*S!!!!!!!

3. I have to admit to p*ssing on my seat, but that was due to the amount of alcohol I had drunk and was sleeping it off in the pub car park cos I didn't dare go home in that condition, even without the car. And as a footnote to this particular topic: At a stag party I was at recently a 22 year old followed thru after f*rting and had to go home to change!!! The last time I did that I was 3.

4. The reason that a lot of E30 drivers don't wave back is probably that they are still quite a common site on the roads, after all they were a mass production model and there is a school of opinion that, apart from the price new, there was nothing special about them.

5. If it wasn't for the older generation you young dudes wouldn't even be here. I know the thought of your parents having sex may be repulsive to you, but they did and that's how you got here. Basic biology lesson over.

6. (Under 25's only). Keep up all the wacky posts and links. You do all the work for me and I can sit in my rocking chair and try to remember what it was like to be 22. Thing is, in my head, I'm still as mental as I was when I was 22 it's just that my body is now paying the price for all my youthful misbehaviour.

Same here. I'm planning on retiring on the next few years but maybe getting a little part-time number to stop me getting bored. I've slogged my guts out for the last 30 years & ploughed as much disposable as I can into a good private pension, so I'm thinking that it'll soon be time to start really doing all the things I enjoy.

I could rant all day about the generation below me (I've got an 18y.o step daughter!), so don't anyone get me started!

I think its due to the way they were brought up. Older people tend to take more care of their posessions where as younger people are brought up in a desposable society if it breaks thow it away and get a new one.

Coupled with the solidity of the E30 and thae fact that with good mainenance they go on forever its not suprising you see so many in good condition driven by older people.

You could also factor in that a lot of E30's were company cars owned by people who didnt use them to commute. So they were well maintained and didnt do high milages. A lot of companies have done away wit company cars so running an E30 make sence
