Having problems filling Zone Roam'11 at the moment,Stu,which 'lakes' are you on about?
Youth is wasted on the young.
Early days I would have thought, I'm assuming he means the Cumbria Lakes.

Looked at this a couple of years back and got a zero response!TPS wrote:Early days I would have thought, I'm assuming he means the Cumbria lakes.
One of the snags I came up against was the cost of hotel accomodation in the area,at the time,I was booking hotels in Scotland for a Zone Roam at around £80 p/h for D/B/B,lakes area, cheapest I could find was in the region of £115 p/h.
With a little experience now given the current 'roam' format, this may well be worth re-visiting.
I was hoping that the OP meant Lake Gardia,TBO!
But the snag there is that strip of water between UK and the rest of Europe, and talking peeps into crossing it....

Yep! What other Lakes (with a capital L) are there?TPS wrote:Early days I would have thought, I'm assuming he means the Cumbria lakes.
You know me Malcolm, I'm not frightened about spending money, but I find the cost of the Zone Roam off-putting and I suspect that there are plenty of others here who are in the same boat. There's also the time factor - some people would find a week too long. A Lakes Tour from, say, anywhere south of Glasgow or north of Stoke would be do-able in a day.

Zone Roam pricey at £240 p/p for a week half board?StuBeeDoo wrote:Yep! What other Lakes (with a capital L) are there?TPS wrote:Early days I would have thought, I'm assuming he means the Cumbria lakes.

Lake District in a day?
Come on,you need at least 2/3 days to do it justice...
Weekends will find the place stacked out with coaches, you really need to be there during the week, say Tuesday-Thursday...so you could get a decent run at things like Hard Knott...
Anyone up for a houseparty type event?
Sometime like April/May '11?
Let's see some names and ideas and I'll see what can be arranged....

Stu if my car is finished and it's an early start late finish kind of day I am well up for that.
A good days blast around the lakes is a great way to spend a day! Car or bike.

You make it sound cheap.... That's not the end of it, though, is it? Multiply it by 2 for a couple, add-in the cost of fuel, ferries, and any other sundries and I'd be looking at at least £650.daimlerman wrote:Zone Roam pricey at £240 p/p for a week half board?
Depends on what you mean by "do it justice". I'm not advocating dawdling around looking at the sights, I'm on about getting out for a decent drive. Having said that, I'm not advocating speeding around the narrow roads terrorising the locals and tourists either.daimlerman wrote:Lake District in a day?

Surely you'd not want to do all the "driving" roads at once. Maybe have a collection of routes - alternating them. You don't do the same route every year on the Zone Roam, do you?
I'd have thought slightly out of "season" would be ideal - early Spring or late Autumn. I can't remember if RSOC do theirs on just a Saturday or both Saturday and Sunday and they don't seem to have any serious problems. Who's going to want to use valuable holiday time from work? Most people only get 4 weeks a year and want to spend most of that with their families, probably out of this country. Ergo, most people will have a preference for doing this sort of stuff on a weekend.daimlerman wrote:Weekends will find the place stacked out with coaches, you really need to be there during the week, say Tuesday-Thursday...so you could get a decent run at things like Hard Knott..

OK,so we are looking at a weekend.
Last time I took a serious look at the 'lakes' for accomodation I found that the hotels were expensive,IMO.This would lead on to using 'self-catering' of some kind, like we used for 'roam' this year and is planned for next.Cost is directly related to numbers,so lets find out how many are up for this.

Count me out if it has to be a stay over large organised thing. I am up for a good Sunday driving around the lakes. Not throughing money away on staying somewhere I am not interesting in.

Malcolm, forgive me, but I think you're getting a bit carried away here.
Firstly, I only asked if anyone had thought about it. I wasn't asking for someone to organise something. Having said that, if there's enough genuine interest it would be nice if we could go a step further.
In one of my earlier posts I specifically said "do-able in a day". I hadn't intended that if anything was subsequently arranged, however tenatively, it would have to include organised accommodation. Surely if people want to come from further afield and therefore need an overnight stop they are capable of sorting themselves out as they see fit.

Having said all that, if there's enough genuine interest in Malcolm's suggestion of a weekend, I'd (sorry we'd - can't leave Wor Lass oot) be up for popping over for a day - preferably a Saturday.StuBeeDoo wrote:Malcolm, forgive me, but I think you're getting a bit carried away here.

Just thinking aloud at the moment,Stu,lakes and back in a day is too much for us,plus I feel that we would do better with a single night stopover, this would give us two sessions 'on the road',Saturday pm and Sunday am.
If you can blast over just for one session,Stu,Dezzy, that's fine by me!
Need 5 to 8 couples/equivilent in singles to make this work,if the numbers pop up I can look further and see what is available.Cost will be directly proportionate to numbers....

thisis just a quick responce for now i`ll come back to it later, the lakes can easily be travelled round in a day and take in all the passes
hardknott & wrynose are next to each other if you go the right ways youll end up being able to go to honister and back over kirkstonepass to the m6 at penrith, it wont be hard to plan the lakedistrict is reletivly small about 38 sq miles iirc, plus you could stay in travel lodge at penrith, barrow you can make it as cheap or exspensive as you like, plus it gets cheaper and quieter at his time of year onwards, and the passes are easier in the mornings when their quiet

For me working 6 days a week it would ideally be a Sunday. Early start, full tank of fuel, blast over, nice days driving, pie pees and chips and back home would be a good day out IMO

StuBeeDoo and Mrs StuBeeDoo could do a Sunday providing it was an early enough start. Say 10hr00 depart from Penrith, followed by 3-4 hours driving/socialising, so that we could be home by 16hr00ish.Dezzy wrote:For me working 6 days a week it would ideally be a Sunday. Penrith's good for us as there's a source of LPG there.

So overnight at the Penrith travel lodge for the travellers, meet up in their carpark 10-10.30am on a Sunday and ask drewjack to plan a suitable route?
Pub somewhere for a spot of lunch?

That's the ticket.
I am liking this idea.

The StuBeeDoos can nip west along the A66, refuel in Penrith and then be good for about 180 miles.
Early Spring's cool.... End of March, maybe the weekend the clocks go forward?
Personally, I'm not over-fussed about doing the likes of Wrynose/Hardknott - everyone does them. The lesser-"known" ones are just as good from a driving perspective. Buttermere village to Braithwaite, passing Moss Force anyone? Or maybe Eskdale to Ulpha (Birker Fell??)?

Righto,we have a basis of a decent meet here,I'll use my awesome mod powers to move this thread to the 'meets' section, but I'll leave a 'shadow' here in 'chat'.....

Cool let's see if we can get the midlands boys up the M6 and maybe the likes of Gareth up if there is some travellers staying over.
This could be done a couple of times a year, before and after the summer maybe.

Easy Dez! Don't let's run before we can walk. I agree it's a good idea ('specially as it was mine!), but better to see what sort of turn-out and feedback we get from the first one.Dezzy wrote:This could be done a couple of times a year, before and after the summer maybe.
ive been asked by daimlerman if i can use my local knowledge of the lakedistrict to help out on this , so in answer to a few comments allready the end of march can be fairly quiet, but its sometimes quite wintery still up here and can get icy up on some of the roads, your a lot higher up than you think even on some open roads.
i would suggest maybe the end of april but to be fair once a route is sorted it would be a case of see how the weather is i think

Fair comment, but it could possibly rule me out. We're often away on holiday that time of year.drewjak wrote:ive been asked by daimlerman if i can use my local knowledge of the lakedistrict to help out on this , so in answer to a few comments allready the end of march can be fairly quiet, but its sometimes quite wintery still up here and can get icy up on some of the roads, your a lot higher up than you think even on some open roads.

The other thing I forgot to mention is that my car seems to have a factory-fitted fear of meets. Every time I commit to one it seems to throw a wobbly. Last time I ended-up rebuilding the bloody engine instead of going to the meet.
We'll do our best for this.
If its a Sunday, might go over on the Saturday and meet up with the main group later

I know the (better roads less tourists) on the west side of the lakes very well and the accommodation is cheaper, esp. if block book on of the youth hostels.
And yes there a lot of good roads in the south west with easy access of the motorway
