I just unbolted mine & pulled it off. Some people have had problems of the inner race sticking to the stub axle. Never know what you're going to have to deal with until you get stuck in.

I have done this job loads of times now. Each time they have been tight. Gas axe tight twice.

It's soooooo much easier in a vice as your at a good working height. If your doing it on the car the my advice is jack it as high as possible. Also the backing plate bolts can be tw4ts to get out.

A sharp chizzle and keep it equal on the way off :D

Cheers for your help dez, my dad has the odd chisel luckily :D

Just read this and this type of puller seems cheap and effective.

I must have had such a hassle-free experience doing this as I can't even remember how I did the job. There wasn't anything wrong with the wheel bearings that were on the touring, but I replaced them along with the backplates anyway. I guess if the bearing is wankered and been getting hot, it's more likely to be grief getting it off the stub.

Actually when I did the chromie I didn't need too. They were just done so everything was new. They were easy. The ones on the red moredoor I wrapped around the central barrier near work were well wankered and were coonts.

From reading Gareths post i take it your on about the front wheel bearing if so the last time i did a set of those it was easy they just slide off no problem at all it took me around an hour and half to do both sides. Im doing the rear wheel bearing on my touring.

Rears are ok as long as he arm is off the car. That's why my M3 set up is getting all new bears before fitting or selling it.

Not on the front :)

a tip for the rears if you don't have a slide hammer, find a deep socket (1/4" ones are about right) and put them between the backing plate and hub and then wind wheelbolts in and use them to jack the hub off :)

I've mentioned to a few local people that the car has felt hesitant of late. Monkey plugged my car into his diagnostics equipment tonight... (Big thanks again btw bud!)

Fault number 1 - exhaust solenoid (its not on the car so its obviously going to be a fault :chuckle:)
Fault number 2 - Faulty Maf :(

Makes sence as to why it feels hesitant. im going to try and clean + test it before bending over for a new one

On the plus side my 4 genuine bmw wheel bearings arrived - but they came without new hubnuts. i would of thought that they would of come with new hubnuts?

I'm not sure if I read somewhere once that a faulty MAF code can also sometimes be a lambda sensor, not sure if that was M52 or not. Maybe Barry can comment?

Monkey did say that you can measure the voltage of the maf and it should be about 6volts iirc... the diagnostic machine said it was getting a maximum of 2volts when the car was stationary and revving.

about 4v or so . that's how i've checked them on other cars if you get much less than 4 v on the output wire and the maf is getting tired i believe

Na i wont buy one yet. I'll clean it out with isopropanol first and see if it makes a difference and then retest + make the decision.

i cleaned out the maf with isopropanol contact cleaning spray and made my way over to monkeys this evening. He read the voltage coming off the maf which read a strong 4volts - so the maf appears to be ok, but this will be confirmed by carsoft. But it does *seem* that the car is abit smoother and it comes on vanos better now (well, it shouts more!) so it must of made abit of difference.

Thanks for the hand + cuppa matt :thumb:

More progress

Renewed my insurance  but, i've finally got rid of the speakers in the rear and fitted my new wing mirrors :D I've now got infinity 5032I speakers in the original holes in the parcel shelf. Im not going to lie, the speakers are AMAZING! Absolutely fantastic quality and they were only about £35.

It even looks atad better in the rear
Image

The rear door cards arent the best but its a minor detail - a huge improvement over the old ones!

Tommorows fun and games will be the front wheel bearings, front 5010cs infinity component speakers (with tweeters in bmw tweeter pods), my front doorcards and hopefully fit my new lock kit + maplight mirror.

I bought them through the zone. They were brand new still in the packaging :D The part numbers on the boxes are:

65 13 1 377 688
65 13 1 377 687

I *think* theyve gone up to about £40 each but dont quote me on that.
