Hey guys, I'm going engine shopping in the local scrap yards tomorow to look for an M62B44 for my E30 and was just wondering how to tell an M62 from an M60. Markings and engine numbers, etc. Also what cars they are found in.
Thanks guys.
Thanks guys.

Hi there ! I can give you some info.. maybe it is useful !
M60 3.0-, 4.0-liter dohc V8 (OBD-I)
1994-1995 E34 530i, 540i, including touring
1994-1995 E32 740i/iL
1994-1995 E31 840Ci
M62: 4.4-liter dohc V8 (VANOS OBD-II)
1997- E39 540i/touring
1996- E38 740i/iL/iS
1996-1999 E31 840Ci
and here you have info about engine numbers on all the BMW engines. (where you can find the number, and what it means)

sorry if my english is not correct, but I'm from Romania. Cheers !

the m60 has the crank sensor / impulse wheel on the front of the crank...behind the belt pulley,
the m62 has the crank position sensor on the gearbox bell housing, as the impulse / position wheel is on the flywheel
hope this helps

M62 has also electric-controlled thermostat, whereas M60 has the conventional unit.
M60 has double chains and M62 single, easily checked via the oil filler cap.

Dont forget the 3.5 M62.
They had water cooled alternators.
