thanks for the advice.there is a dodgy wire that seems to be for the selector lights would that cause the fuse to blow?.it blows the fuse as soon as you turn the key.also where abouts is the ecu in the boot.not a happy bunny

Hi Meister, I see you continued on another thread! I think the selector light wire could well be your problem. The selector lights come on day or night when the ignition is turned on so that would seem to make sense. The gearbox ECU is situated in the boot behind a carpeted removeable panel on the inner nearside wing. Its the size of a couple of fag packets. Very unusual for a fault with these but worth a look but I would suspect dodgy connections around the selector itself.

The selector light should have a fuse all to itself (No.9, 15A) according to my list. Why a 2W lamp should require a 15A fuse is a mystery!
Looking at a wiring diagram I have gives the selector switch light coming off fuse 10, so I'm not sure which is right. Niether my fuse list or the wiring diagram makes any reference to the switchable auto, so I've no idea which fuse is for that lot.
I've got a switchable auto and two ordinary autos in a shed 100 yards away, but it's pouring with rain, so I ain't checking now.
Wil;l have a look in the morning if I remember.

Just checked on my switchable auto, and, after replaceing the blown lamp, the selector lever light is on fuse 10, not 9 as the handbook says.
If this is the fuse that is blowing, then the wiring to this lamp is definitely the first place to look.

Thank you for all your advice.Ive rewired the selector lights and its still poping fuses but only if i stick it in park? The main worry ive got now is the box wont switch modes, its stuck in sports and suppin motion lotion at a scary rate, maybe its time for a trip to the local bmw dealer. That thought really scares me.

sounds like you have a direct sort on this when in park would check if the earth ar all joined to one or multidropped to the same point
as for the switchable being stuk in sports sound like an eart problem on the selector switch
Check that cable holder on top of gearbox is away from the por you might have chaffed cable under neath .
