Are the letters and numbers that show the registration the correct type of so then yese30mtec wrote:yes they are reflective and do have a gb european stars thing on it on left hand side..so theyre legal then?

I was under the impression that they needed the postcode of the plate maker engraved/printed on the lower edge to be 100% legal...
I'm looking at getting some legal pressed plates made for mine but the sending of documents etc. is a pain in the backside!

We had a customer that got stopped with the uk legal pressed plates like the ones on Magpies and the bloke got tugged for them. I can't quite remember the full story but I think it came down to the bs number was printed on the face of the plate and not etched or something like that. He was well pi$$ed of when he came down to our garage for our opinion as we had MOT'd it and saw my non legal pressed plates on my car. When he told me of his £60 fine I was rather tempted to take mine off. I will get round to it one day....

E30's can get away with minor deviations from what are 'legal' plates, because they were all registered and fitted with plates before September 2001, when the new regs came into force.
Although the new regs apply to all replacement plates, the Police aren't going to get involved into proving exactly when your current plates were fitted.

I have pressed plates in german font with the eu badge and EU letters rather than D or GB as its a compromise. I was never stopped but have changed them now anyway as I decided it was getting bit council... My dads an mot tester and he measured the width/height of the german font and spacing etc and it's pretty much same as ours just with the tails on like 1 as opposed to our l. He couldn't see a reason why they,d fail an mot as they are perfectly readable with correct spacing, badge and reflective ess. Then again we all know what the plod are like....
