I've got an old headunit that I want to put in my car, but don't want to go to hassle of fitting it if it doesn't work. So two questions:
1. Will connecting it straight to a battery damage it?
2. What leads need connecting up? The earth obviously, and then power or ignition, or both?

dont connect it straight to the battery unless you wanna blow yourself up. just connect the wires up in the car? you dont have to fit it for it to work

Cheers mate, just didn't want to bother taking the one in the car out if the old one doesn't work. Don't want to look like your avatar either, so I'll follow your advice

Connecting it to a battery is fine but to be safe, put a fuse in line.
Any 12V DC supply will be fine.

yep connecting to a car battery is fine be careful with all the other wires etc and connect the black wire to the - negative terminal on the battery and connect the red and yellow to the + terminal on the battery it should turn on but that doesnt mean the speaker outputs will work until you connect them to a speaker

Cheers chaps. The yellow wire already has a fuse attached so I'll give it a bash.
EDIT - Just had a go with my battery booster/charger. Worked a treat connected to my hi-fi speakers
