An overdue update!

The last six weeks have seen various jobs finished off in an attempt to have the car ready for the pod yesterday. Most of the work i wanted done got finished in time but as always, there are still jobs to do.

I'll start with the A/C as this was a job i started in April! Ive been doing this in stages with the parts behind the dash tackled a few pages back so now we have the engine bay components and wiring to cover.

First up is the fan. This was a very lucky ebay find as its a brand new genuine BMW old stock item that a trade seller who sells new old stock for BMW, VAG, Merc and Porsche. I got it for £100 and he was local so i collected. New from BMW they are £280 so i was chuffed with that!

By the looks of the label on the box, it was originally at Vines Guildford and was delivered there from Bracknel in Jan 2000 so its been sitting on their shelf for a while!

Image

Image

Next up was an OE quality condensor from Euro Car parts for a resonable £60. This was given a dose of wax oil on the ends that are prone to rust. New rubber mounts and fittings to mount the fan were used with a smear of copper grease incase it needs to come appart at some point.

Image

Image

Image

Fan and condensor bolted together and sitting on its new mounts in the front panel.

Image

The next thing i tackled with the A/C fit was the engine bay loom. The body looms thankfully already have the relevant wiring for the A/C up to the fuse box from inside the car but the engine bay loom need to be pluged into the fuse box. I cut the fuse box from the donor car with just the A/C loom left atatched and then used the correct BMW terminal removal tool to unclip the spade terminals from the relay and fuse positions in the box.

Image

Image

After that, the old dried out loom tape was removed and recovered with new stuff then routed to the correct places and pluged into the fuse box.

Image

Image

Image

Next was onto the compressor, first the mounting bracket bolted to the side of the block, then the compressor with adjuster bracket and a new belt.

Image

Image

After this was done the remaining pipework and receiver/dryer was plumbed in but i forgot to take pics of these as i was in a rush to finish due to the workshop being locked up at 5pm one saturday! I will post some pics of the completed pipe work when it take some.

Yes Steve, its gassed and blowing ice cold! Colder than a thought it would! :D

Ill take some pics of the pipework and update later in the week.

In the mean time heres a couple of other bits that ive added.

This item is very much a "marmite" love it or hate it thing for sure! Im undecided if it will stay or not but i am liking it at the mo! A rare morsel that is the "Dekor Heck blende" and a genuine BMW one at that as there is a Hella made replica one as well. Someone joked that my car now looks like an Audi 90!

Thanks must go to Ratch for this item.

Image

A pic of it fitted at night, the number plate lights iluminate it as well!

Image

Also fitted some brand new grills including the all important A/C specific kidney grill. Thses along with some new orange indicator lenses have transformed the front end!

Image

Image

Another nice touch is some exact replica number plates of the original selling dealer L&C Croydon which is now Cooper Croydon. I already have the tax disc holder and key ring, just need to get a rear window sticker made up now.

The L&C one was a lucky find in a write off that was going to salvage when i worked at Renault.

The Cooper ones are available at any Cooper BMW dealer.

The tax disc holder B7 Trev found in our local breakers in some random scrap BMW.

I also have an identical one but L&C Tunbridge Wells.

Mo, its one of the perks of the job.

Came from a genuine minter 64k 318 that had serious rear end damage. Cleaned up well that tax disc holder. A nice touch.

Doubt I'll ever find a Quadrofoglio one for my own car :(

I dont have a front centre arm rest and dont think i'll bother.

Heated washer jets, mirrors and door lock are yet to be fitted but i have all those.

Also need a spare wheel fuel can.

Ok time to round up on the A/C install.

Heres a pic of the pipe work in the engine bay and the compressor from above.

Image

Image

Also added this label for the A/C system. Note that its to original R12 type label and not the later blue R134a type label. I went with the obsolete one as looks more original than the later type and i dont need the later info as its only me who works on the car! (Note the W. Germany)

Image

And after all the time, money, blood sweat and tears the A/C finaly works!! :woohoo:
We now have a temp of 1.8 degrees at the vents!!! Thats better then some modern BMW's!
After reading various threads on American E30 forums about A/C, i didnt hold out to much hope of it performing brilliantly but im pleased to say its very cold!

Just in time for winter!

Barry now has shares in the company that makes them so the magic trees are compulsory.

Simone, if you have followed the thread you will have read that i mentioned you fitting the cruise while i wrestled Oz's black head lining into place.

brettski, everyone who sees the car mentions the magic tree thing! Basicly after the first one, i kept adding them without removing them so one of them has been in the over 4 years! Its kind of part of the cars history now. My magic forrest, sad but true.

Oh and it doesnt smell of "new car scent" any more, just fresh leather! :D

Cheers Cook.

Yes it has been a bit late for it to finaly be up and running but i have been working most of my spare time. A/C is also alot better at demisting the front screen than just hot air so it has its uses in the winter as well not that the car will get much use this winter.

I've also got to wire in the heated front seats, that prob wont get done till next summer!

I've also finaly fitted this after buying it in september '09! A Nakamichi CD500 (The propper one, not the budget unit with a Nak face that is the CD300!) which is MP3 compatible and has an aux input so i can use my ipod with it.

Image

No nav or blue tooth but this head unit aint about gadgets, its about sound quality and that is freakin awesome!

It replaces my 4 year old Alpine CDA 9857R which itself is a very good head unit for SQ.

The Nak is now heading up the rest of my system which my all be removed and go into a daily car so i actually get to use it! The rest of the sytem comprises of,

1x Alpine PDX 4.150 4 chanel 600W amp
1X Alpine V12 1000W Mono amp
13cm Alpine components front in BMW tweeter pods and footwells
13cm Alpine components rear in BMW premium speaker housings
12" Alpine type R sub woofer

The BMW premium speakers, part of the Hifi pack.

Image

Image

Im happy with the system as the SQ is very good and without looking in the boot it all looks standard, even the Nak head unit is very subtle and almost OEM like in appearace but the OEM homo in me is fighting back to remove all the amps and sub!

Keep one amp for the fronts but lose the Sub.

Having said that, I have a decent HU, Amp and Speakers with audiophile cabling and it sill sounds shite. E30's just suck for sound.

They need a sub to get some sort of SQ. The 13cm's are not man enough on their own and are'nt in the best locations.

Another job i have tackled recently is the under bonnet foam which is a common E30 problem and can be very unsightly under the bonnet when its old and crumbly!

A top tip for this job!

I have heard of other people tackeling this and it being very messy and time consuming. Well i have found something that speeds things up and reduces the mess!

Toytas own brand brake cleaner! It is solvent based and after removing the bonet, pulling of the bigger chunks of foam you are lift with the glue still on the bonnet with a thin layer of foam.
The Toyota brake cleaner disolves the glue and foam and turns it into a mush that can be scraped of, near enough wiped off with plastic filler spreader and a rag.

Once the mush is removed a wipe down with the brake cleaner and the surface is ready to stick the new foams on. The brake cleaner does not damage the paint in any way either.

Much better! :D
