E34 fuel tanks (except M5 ones AFAIK) are plastic and, unless damaged in an accident, don't leak...
However, the breather system does leak...and badly! There are plenty of small (rubber) pipes that can spring a leak and there is an expansion bottle tucked into the right hand rear arch behind the liner and next to the filler...These also can get damaged and te connections on the plastic can become brittle and snap/leak...
Easy enough to fix once the car is on a ramp, though (you need to lower the tank to replace all of the rubber pipes).
My old E34 530i SE saloon with M30 motor averaged 27mpg which was better than my E30 325i of approx same power....The 535 should be about the same consumption wise...

My old man has an 540i for about 5 years. In that time it had to have a new gearbox and the engine had to be rebuilt ( under warrenty ). The e34 was/is one of the tightest cars I've known , but alas they have been council fodder for some time now. The 540i gave better mpg than my Alpina does lol!

If you're talking about mine I do go to Gosport occasionally but there is a 525 Sport (I think) very similar to mine that I believe is also in the same area, maxlee wrote:my friends got a 525i with a few mods he is getting 27mpg + all the time
