Well thats not too far, I take it spectators are allowed??
And who knows, all being well I may even drive the 330i there

Though the Ariel Atom is gonna be cool to watch.

Im sure it will be fine mate. And considering how much of beast it is, I reckon a track is the best place for its first run.glenn wrote: but dont forget, this will be my cars maiden voyage and anything could happen 'cough' break![]()

I will come along, its about time I met some more people from on here. And hopefully I will be in the E30. Im working extra shifts at the moment to pay for the last few things, not to mention insurance

That Ariel Atom should be a laugh to watch. Only ever seen one and that had gone through a hedge and landed in field.

Hi Glenn,
Am I correct, in that I read somewhere in your Project/Thread that you are or will be running E36 M3 Rear Brakes ?
I have read about somebody on the Zone running E36 M3 rear brakes and was curious to find out if there were any major issues [ 5 stud conversion aside].
Regards,
The Gorilla.

i wish i had a pound for everytime i had someone telling me it couldn't be done, and mostly from bmw 'specialists'.
i spoke to at least 5 of them who said i'd never get the vanos units to work.
i very nearly gave the project up before it got started, as i was being put off by some 'specialists'.
i understand mechanical things and how they work, no problem,
but i'm not too hot on electrics, but i've had big help off ian(ian332isport)
off here, for them.

I first asked around for info on the S50 conversion in Oct 2002 and was told by a number of 'specialists' that it wasnt possible, so I didnt go any futher with it.
Then I saw Ians 332i in Total BMW in 2003. Was a little bit annoyed with the 'specialists' and even when I showed them Ians in the mag, they still said its not possible.

Glenn,
I'm struggling to figure out your instrument weirdness. I've had a good look through the wiring diagrams, and it looks like the signal from the sensors does not go directly to the gauge itself. It appears to get put onto some sort of Data bus and transmited as digital info rather than an analogue signal.
There does however seem to be a link between the Oil temperature and the Water temp sensors. Here is an extract from the BMW CD:
Oil temperature gauge
On the M-models, an oil temperature gauge is used in the instrument cluster instead of the fuel consumption indicator.
The oil temperature displayed in the instrument cluster comes via the CAN bus from the digital engine electronics to the instrument cluster. On the S62 engine, the oil temperature shown in the instrument cluster is displayed as a mean value of the oil temperature measured value of the oil level transmitter and the dual coolant temperature sensor (temperature engine exit).
Ian.

Glenn,
I am not sure what problems you are encountering re- the Water and Oil temp gauges and am guessing that you have kept the E30 Dash and E30 binnacle and are intending to use their Water temp guage and Oil temp guage, correct ?
I would suggest that your water temp wierdness and maybe your Oil temp as well, will be down to the fact that the gauges in the E30 dash are unable to read the E39 Data.
If you had the E39 senders and senors and also the e39 Dash pod and gauges then I do not think you would encounter any problem.
If you have this configuration, then check what type sender you have for the water temp, as its like trying to have a phone conversation on a analouge phone over a digital system, if you get my meaning.

The Gorilla.

as you can see, i've managed to install the e39 instrument cluster
into the e30 surround.
but because i was too impatient to wait for my brother- in- law, to do my electrics, i've lost my revcounter, and the oil and water gauges go to max when the ignition is turned on.
i may end up having to lose the e39 clocks and go back to e30 clocks if i cant sort it.
the trouble is i've cut too many wires

this is what i took out!

Glenn,
I am not able to resolve your problem for you but might be able to throw a little light on it.
I have had eletrical problems with the S52 Conversion I am currently preparing.
The Auto Electrician, was explaining to me what BMW have done on the EWS Stage 2 program, which takes in the E39 M5.
All the sensors and prods take the information back to the ECU whereby its shared Data. The data links then all share the very same information but extract from this circling info the relevent parts as they require it.
If the loop is not complete, then guages tend to read right to the top, which is what I think you are experincing ?
I think in triming down your loom, some data links have been removed and from their the info can not be translated into the proper code.
He gave me an example of this, on the E36 Fuel tank which is a two compartment tank their are two senders, one in each side, a pulse is sent every five seconds or so, to both senders, which goes back to the ECU computer, it then calculates what the level is in each Tank, does a calculation, works out how full the car is, and then sends this data to the fuel gauge for it register correctly.
If you disconnect one of the fuel guage sensors, then the info in the data link can not be calculated correctly and therefore when the car is turned on the Tank, after about five seconds will read full.
From the sound of it, your Loom is not able to complete its data links and therefore the shared info going into the ECU, can not complete its Data cycle, so the guages read to the top.
Hope this gives some more insight into what might be going on.

thanks gorilla,
i've been reading information off the wds disc that ian sorted me out with for two weeks now, and what your saying is correct with the disc.
i'm not sure what i'm going to do with the clocks now, whether to use the e30 cluster or continue persevere with the e39 cluster.
andrew,
you can have the wire mate,
maybe give it to richy to bring up to the next meet that he attends?

Glenn, what can I say, your conversion is awesome (and sounds the biz)!
I am planning an S50 and 5 stud conversion in a touring and noticed you have E36 front end. Just a few questions.
Do you have the part number for that eccentric bush thingy and how much?
What Rim width and offset wheels are those? I was thinking of using E36 328iS split rim BBS ones but would like to tuck the tyres well into the arches.
Do I need the complete strut assembly (like this picture) Plus the calipers.

Was gonna try to source Z3 or E36 compact bits for the rear end.
Keep up the good work!
regards

sandy,
i've replied to your pm,
just let me know if you've got it, as it keeps coming up' not sent'
it's starting to frighten me the amount of people who are coming to see it go.
because, if it breaks down after 10 mins, i'm going to look like a right knob
so i may take it for a bit of a blast somewhere local just to see if it all holds together

This is correct for the E39, but I can guarantee that this is not the case on the E36. On the E36, there is a very basic data bus for coding the various modules, but it's not used for general operation of the car.GermanGorilla wrote:He gave me an example of this, on the E36 Fuel tank which is a two compartment tank their are two senders, one in each side, a pulse is sent every five seconds or so, to both senders, which goes back to the ECU computer, it then calculates what the level is in each Tank, does a calculation, works out how full the car is, and then sends this data to the fuel gauge for it register correctly.

The E36 fuel gauge sender is connected directly to the instrument cluster, and has no connection to the ECU.

now THIS is one mammoth project, i'm only thinking of buying a 325i and dropping a e34 big six in it. but you're project is well... mad, did u ever see that guy (somewhere in the world, probably germany) who dropped a V12 in his e30, mad, but you dropping an M5 in your is insane too, i might come too, where and when is the big day? sorry only a pug 106 diesel here, gonna get a 3.5 from breakers and rebuild it, then buy a bmw, fun for me, loads more for you! BRILLIANT, gotta respect you for having the balls to do this.

a little slow at the moment due to 'lack of funds'

but i'm just getting it ready for the trackday.
put a new battery on her last weekend, the biggest i could fit in there,
720 cold cranking amps. tidied up some of the cockpit wires, washed it!
connected a couple more wires under the bonnet, one for oil pressure,
the other is radiator temp( which controls the thermostat).
took me an hour to empty the crap out of the boot! still got the back seats to do yet
