Well, it's been a bit of a marathon getting to this point (mainly due to being messed around by other people - Bodyshops and Aircon Engineers), but I am happy to report that it's finally in and working.

Had to do a fair bit of custom pipework to mate the E30 pipes to the E36 M3 compressor. This was not helped by BMW using non standard aircon hose sizes :x . Also had to integrate the E30 aircon system into the E36 ECU, but overall, it was not that hard to install.

We just tested the system, and it's blowing about 4.5 degrees C out of the vents

Shame summer's over really

Go drive to the south of france or something, just to test it out!

I have loads of questions!
How does the ECU affect the Air con? Is it climate control?
Do you think its much better than the e30 system?
Any ideas of overall cost?
Did you do a write up/pictures of the install?

Question Question, but most of all a big WELL DONE

Is it a first? winkeye winkeye

In a standard E30, it does not really do much with the ECU. It just sends a signal (12v) to the ECU to tell it to up the idle speed when the A/C is switched on. Because of my engine conversion, it works a bit differently, as it's the ECU that tells the compressor to engage. I had to simulate several signals that would normally come from the E36 Climate computer, but the advantage of doing it like this, is that it drops the A/C off when you give it full throttle :D
Do you think its much better than the e30 system?
It's the E30 system that I have fitted, it's just the pipework and wiring that I had to modify to get it working.
Any ideas of overall cost?
It probably cost in the region of Ԛ£600, as I replaced a lot of the pipework, and fitted a new Condenser & Dryer. I'm sure it could be done cheaper on a standard E30 if you get a good A/C setup from the donor car.
Did you do a write up/pictures of the install?
Unfortunately not

Not sure on the economy yet, as not been anywhere since I got it running (this afternoon).

To be honest, it's not that complicated, just a lot of work involved to get the dash out to change the heater box. The rest is pretty easy really.

Cheers,

Ian.

Had a half hearted pop at an E30 aircon heater unit the other day on ebay, with the idea of doing similar with my M50 engined touring.
Got all the under bonnet aircon bits from the E34 donor, which look like they can all be adapted to fit. Just need the inside cabin bits.
